Dame Darcey Andrea Bussell DBE (born Darcey Andrea Crittle ; born April 27, 1969 in London ) is an English ballet dancer . She has been President of the Royal Academy of Dance since 2012 .

biography

Bussell was born the daughter of the Australian businessman John Crittle and his English wife Andrea. After her parents divorced, she was the new husband of her mother, the Australian dentist Philip Bussell adopted . She attended Fox Primary School London and then the Arts Educational School London .

Career as a dancer

At the age of 13 Bussell began taking ballet lessons at the Royal Ballet School . After graduating from Lower School in 1985 , she continued her studies at Upper School and performed in smaller productions at the Royal Opera House . In 1987 Bussell joined the Sadler's Wells Ballet .

While still at school, the choreographer Kenneth MacMillan noticed her talent and made her dance the lead role in Benjamin Britten's The Prince of the Pagodas in 1988 , after which she joined the London Royal Ballet . A year later she was appointed Principal Dancer. She was the youngest dancer in the company to receive this honor.

In the course of her career, Bussell has danced all of the leading and title roles in the great ballet classics. She also enjoyed particular success with MacMillan's choreographies Winter Dreams (as Masha ) and The Prince of the Pagodas (as Princess Rose ). She has also appeared on several television shows, including the comedy series The Vicar of Dibley and French and Saunders .

She has won various awards, including the Dancer of the Year award from Dance and Dancers magazine and the Evening Standard Ballet Award from the Evening Standard newspaper .

On June 8, 2007, Bussell ended her career as a stage dancer with a performance of MacMillan's choreography Song of the Earth (music by Gustav Mahler ). The performance took place at the Royal Opera House in London, was broadcast live on the BBC Two television network, and Bussell received more than eight minutes of standing ovation at the end.

In 2007 Bussell put together the stage show Viva la Diva together with the mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins . It is a tribute to the famous people who influenced the two artists, including Madonna and Judy Garland . Part of the show was performed during a gala in front of the British Queen .

Trivia

A rose was named after Bussell, which is described as a "modern romantic rose", crimson red and slightly fragrant. She has published a Pilates video and has written several children's books about a girl who wants to dance ballet.

Private life

Bussell has been married to the Australian banker Angus Forbes since 1997. They have two daughters. The family lives in Sydney .

Bussell was named a lady at the Queen's annual New Year's ceremony in January 2018.
