Royal Academy of Dance
The Royal Academy of Dance Worldwide Group (short RAD or Royal Academy of Dance , both abbreviations are registered trademarks) is an organization that publishes educational guidelines for teaching classical ballet , offers ballet courses and holds exams for ballet students and teachers. With almost 13,000 members, it is the world's largest organization of its kind.
history
In 1920 Philip Richardson, editor of the Dancing Times, invited some of the greatest figures in classical dance to London with the aim of improving "the poor quality and poorly organized state of dance training in Britain at this time". 5 guests of honor represent the predominant country-specific ballet techniques and schools:
- Phyllis Bedells (England)
- Lucia Cormani (Italy)
- Edouard Espinosa (France)
- Adeline Genée (Bournonville School, Denmark)
- Tamara Karsawina ( Imperial Ballet School , Russia)
A few months later the Association of Teachers of Operatic Dancing was founded and an initial curriculum was presented to the public. In 1921, the first elementary level examination took place, followed by the intermediate and advanced level exams in the following years . In 1936, shortly before his death , King George V became the organization's patron, after which it became the Royal Academy of Dancing . Since then, the patronage has been taken over by the incumbent British Majesty. In 1997, the Royal Academy of Dance and The Benesh Institute merged , an organization that deals with the written fixation of choreographies using the Benesh dance notation (see Choreology ).
