Bruce Forsyth
Sir Bruce Joseph Forsyth-Johnson , CBE (born February 22, 1928 in London - † August 18, 2017 there ) was a British entertainer , television presenter and actor . He has been active since 1939 and was inducted into the Guinness Book of Records in 2013 as an entertainer with the longest television career .
Life
Bruce Joseph Forsyth-Johnson was born in Edmonton , London . His parents owned a small workshop and were active in the Salvation Army . His great, great, great grandfather was the British botanist William Forsyth , after whom the forsythia are named. Bruce Forsyth attended The Latymer School in Edmonton. At the age of fourteen he made his debut as a singer, dancer and accordionist under the name Boy Bruce, the Mighty Atom . He had his first appearance at the Theater Royal in Bilston . He made his television debut in 1939 on the show Come and Be Televised . His brother John, who was serving as a pilot in the Royal Air Force , died in a training accident in Scotland in 1943 .
In the years after the war Forsyth worked unsuccessfully as a stage actor and pantomime in the circus. In 1958 he met comedian Dickie Henderson , through whom he became a presenter on the television show Sunday Night at the London Palladium . Forsyth hosted the show intermittently until 1964.
In 1968 Forsyth made his film actor debut in the musical film Star! at the side of Julie Andrews . In the same year he released his first single I'm Backing Britain on Pye Records , written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent . Forsyth's best-known film appearances include the role of Swimburne in The Daredevil Witch in Her Flying Bed .
From 1971 to 1977 and from 1990 to 1994 Forsyth was the presenter of the television show The Generation Game , which was presented in Germany by Rudi Carrell under the title On the Run . From October to December 1978 he also hosted the short-lived show Bruce Forsyth's Big Night . Forsyth also appeared as a guest on other television series, including an episode of The Muppet Show in 1976 and the 1986 crime series Magnum . His later shows have included Play Your Cards Right , Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak , the sitcom Slinger’s Day, and You Bet! .
On the occasion of his seventieth birthday, Forsyth gave a week-long show at the London Palladium in 1998 . In 2003 and 2010 he hosted the panel show Have I Got News for You as a guest appearance . From 2004 to 2013 he was also co-host of the dance show Strictly Come Dancing . In April 2014, Forsyth announced his retirement as a live show host. A planned comeback as a presenter in the Christmas special of Strictly Come Dancing in December 2016 had to be canceled due to health problems.
Forsyth was married a total of three times. His last marriage to Wilnelia Merced lasted since 1983. He was the father of six children. Bruce Forsyth died in August 2017 at the age of 89.
