biography

Youth and family

Emma Bunton was born the only daughter of milkman Trevor Bunton and his wife Pauline, a karate teacher . Her parents separated in 1987 when Bunton was eleven years old. Bunton then stayed with her mother and grew up in her birthplace, the London borough of Finchley. She attended Underhill primary school in Barnet and then London's Sylvia Young Theater School .

On August 10, 2007 and May 6, 2011, Bunton gave birth to two sons in London. The father of both children is their longtime boyfriend Jade Jones, a British boy band singer .

Spice Girls

In 1994, on the advice of her singing teacher, Bunton joined the Spice Girls (then still Touch ) after the original fifth member, Michelle Stephenson , left the band for family reasons. The group then released three studio albums ( Spice , Spiceworld and Forever ) and developed into one of the most successful music phenomena, thanks not least to ten global number 1 hits (including Wannabe , 2 Become 1 and Viva Forever ) and a total of more than 40 million records sold the 1990s . From 2001 the members of the band went their separate ways.

Six years after their separation, the Spice Girls announced a world tour with eleven concerts in June 2007. On their comeback, the Spice Girls appeared again in the original line-up. The tour was a complete success and featured 47 sold out concerts. It was also the most successful tour of 2008. In 2007, the Virgin Atlantic airline dedicated an airplane called Spice One to them, which all five band members inaugurated together. In March 2007, the band was recognized as an icon in London by Capital FM. Bunton accepted the award together with Melanie Chisholm . In 2010 the band received another award for the most memorable performance at the BRIT Awards 1997 (received by Geri Halliwell and Melanie Brown ). At the end of 2011, their joint musical entitled Viva Forever was released . This was performed in London and directed by Judy Craymer, the producer of Mamma Mia . It was also written by British actress Jennifer Saunders .

Solo career

Bunton had her first solo TV appearance in 1998 with Rod Steward . They sang his hit Tonight's The Night on British television. Furthermore, she had the opportunity to prove her solo skills during the Spiceworld Tour 1998 . There she sang the Supremes classic Where Did Our Love Go . In 2001 she released her first studio album, A Girl Like Me . The record brought the UK number 1 hit What Took You So Long? , the Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians cover What I Am (Is What I Am) and the top 10 single Take My Breath Away . Nevertheless, despite more than 500,000 copies sold worldwide, Bunton was unable to continue the success of the Spice Girls. Virgin Records then separated from her, which signed a new contract with Simon Fuller's 19 Management and Polydor Records the following year .

On June 3, 2002, Bunton appeared on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Elizabeth II at the Party at the Palace in the garden of Buckingham Palace and sang the song Baby Love by the Supremes as well as with the American musician Brian Wilson and the British girl group Atomic Kitten's colleagues wrote the song Good Vibrations .

After two years of production, Bunton's second studio album, Free Me , was released in spring 2004 . The record, which was influenced by 60's Pop and Bossa Nova , produced three top 10 and one top 20 hits with the title song extracted from it and the singles Free Me , Maybe , I'll Be There and Crickets Sing for Anamaria . Subsequent attempts to establish the album on the US music market failed; Remixes of the songs Free Me and Maybe could only gain acceptance in the States in Airplay and Club Play charts.

2006 Bunton was involved in the October to December 2006 broadcast fifth season of the television show Strictly Come Dancing in Great Britain.

On November 20, 2006, Bunton's single Downtown , a cover version of the globally successful song from 1964, was released. The video includes all participants of the already started show Strictly Come Dancing . In the UK, the song went straight to number 3 on the charts. Two weeks later, on December 4, 2006, their album Life was released in mono , which reached number 65 in the British charts. On February 12, 2007, All I Need to Know was released as a second single and only reached number 60 in the British single charts due to a lack of promotion. The video was shot in London at the end of December 2006. Due to her pregnancy, she decided in March 2007 to temporarily end her musical solo career. In the meantime, however, she often emphasized that music was her first love. Her last vocal performance was in 2008 on the British evening TV show One Night Only , in which she sang the classic Let's Face the Music and Dance in a duet.

In 2018 Emma Bunton signed a record deal with BMG. The first single, Baby Please Don't Stop , was released in February 2019 . The album My Happy Place will follow in April 2019 .

Acting career

Bunton made his acting debut in 1993 . She made an appearance in the British series The Bill in the role of Janice and in the television film Play the King in the role of a prostitute . In 1997 she made her cinema debut in Spiceworld - The Movie in which she embodied herself. She was seen alongside Brenda Blethyn as Pop Angel in the 2001 short film Yes You Can . In 2005 she starred in two Bollywood films: Pyaar Mein Twist as a dancer and Chocolat as Anna . She has also been featured in the UK comedy series Absolutely Fabulous . She had other comedy appearances on the British TV show Bo 'Selecta, among others . In 2016 she made a cameo in the movie Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie .

Radio and TV career

Bunton practiced as a presenter as early as the 1990s. She had her own one-hour music show called Emma on the British music channel VH1 , which was broadcast with great success. Among other things, she co-moderated the German version of Top of the Pops on RTL together with Melanie C in 1998 . Since 2009 she has been working as a radio presenter for the British broadcaster heart fm . Since this was very popular, it was also used in other shows (e.g. as a pregnancy replacement). During her work at heart fm , she already interviewed some great personalities such as B. Johnny Depp , Sarah Jessica Parker or Meryl Streep as well as her friend and bandmate Melanie C. She was also a jury member of the ITV show Dancing on Ice until 2011 . In 2018 she was a guest juror for the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars .

Designer career

The British fashion chain Argos has been marketing the children's fashion created by Bunton since 2011 . Her collection has been very popular ever since.
