Spice ( English for: Spice ) is the multi-platinum debut album by the British pop band Spice Girls , which was released on November 4, 1996. It was released under the Virgin label and is attributed to the pop and dance genre . It includes the single Wannabe and has sold over 23 million copies.

History of origin

From September 1995 through the summer of 1996, the Spice Girls wrote and recorded songs for their debut album while touring extensively the west coast of America, where they signed a recording contract with Windswept Pacific. In each of the ten pieces, the Spice Girls made their contribution to the lyrics as well as the music. But this was probably very low. They hired Simon Fuller , head of 19 Entertainment , who provided them with lyricists and songwriters.

success

In November 1996, the Spice Girls released Spice in Europe. Despite negative reviews, the album became a commercial success. It became the best-selling album in Europe in 1997 and was awarded eight times platinum by the IFPI for sales of over 8 million copies. Spice was also the best-selling album in the USA in 1997, where it was awarded 7 × platinum by the RIAA (for sales of over 7 million copies).

Criticism and reception

The album was received with mixed feelings by the critics. Music magazines labeled music and style as irrelevant pop music and criticized the band's naive “girl power” image. Through the image, charisma and catchy music, not least through the media campaign, the Spice Girls became stars that were celebrated by the teen press like Bravo .

Wannabe became the girl power anthem of the 90s and almost overnight made the Spice Girls superstars worldwide and role models for a whole generation of young girls. The lively dance pop of the five girls from England is powerful, sexy and funny. The good mood of Emma, Mel C, Victoria, Mel B and Geri is contagious. With a good dose of self-confidence, the Spice Girls show the boys where to go. It is not just the music with which the Spice Girls know how to convince: It is the self-image with which the five appear and proclaim slogans such as Future Is Female or It's Girl's World . With the single 2 Become 1 at the latest , the girls show that they can do more than just create a good mood: The ballad is a mature performance with which the Spice Girls catapult themselves out of the teen pop corner to be taken seriously by serious critics to become. If you don't want to miss out on the optical enjoyment of the five Spices, you should watch Spiceworld - The Film . The film features some songs by Spice. "

Music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine notes:

"[...] it is still irresistible, immaculately crafted pop that gets by on the skills of the producer and the charisma of the five spices. [...] it sounds good while it's on, which is the key to a good dance-pop record. "
