Sales of the album were supported by the film of the same name ( Spiceworld - The Film ).

background

Album information

In October 1997, the pre-released single Spice Up Your Life was released and gave the band their fifth number 1 hit. A month later the album Spiceworld was released . The album sold 18 million times worldwide, 1.9 million of them in England.

The album sales were supported by the film of the same name Spiceworld - The Film and the world tour of the same name. The album was recorded between September 1996 and April 1997. This happened parallel to the film work. For this purpose, the band had a mobile, fully equipped recording studio, which moved with the film team from one place to the next. As with the predecessor, the Spice Girls were involved in both the lyrics and the music on all songs. According to Geri , the album "became a kind of reflection of our film experiences" . After filming, the studio recordings continued in the Abbey Road studio, where the Beatles and Oasis had previously recorded.

The structure of the album was based heavily on its predecessor Spice . So the album consisted of 10 tracks again. The girls present themselves again in the letters of the word "SPICE" in the sense of the nicknames given to them by Top of the Pop Magazine . On one side of the booklet, as before, there are Spice slogans such as I´ma girl, I can do it. Dynamite Diva , Choose life, choose Spice u. a., while the lyrics are on the opposite side.
In addition, fans could once again purchase Spice Girls souvenirs such as a Polaroid camera, watches, mugs or T-shirts by post.

Criticism and reception

“Hardly any other group is currently being marketed as consistently as the British Spice Girls. Not a total work of art, but a tough calculated product. So not worth considering in a serious review? Yes, yes. Because "Spiceworld" offers well-made pop music that hardly leaves out a traditional or current style and sound: sometimes Tamla Motown, sometimes funk, here the Sugar Loaf Mountain, there Philadelphia. Modern rhythm & blues, ballads and girlie hymns round off the offer, as well as a big-band number with funny lyrics. Good, professional entertainment and plenty of positive vibrations. The Spice Girls have grown up in the process, but have not lost their charm. Well-made pop music that is charming despite the emphasis on made. "

- Detlev Kinsler : HIFI test

"Spiceworld is a better record than its predecessor, boasting a more consistent (and catchier) set of songs and an intoxicating sense of fun. Instead of merely rewriting Spice, Spiceworld consolidates and expands the group's style, adding Latin flourishes ("Spice Up Your Life"), kitschy blues ("The Lady Is a Vamp"), and stomping, neo-Motown blue-eyed soul in the vein of Culture Club ("Stop"). The girls - Mel C. in particular - are actually turning into good vocalists, and each song plays to their strengths, giving each Spice a chance to shine. Best of all, each song has a strong melody and a strong, solid beat, whether it's a ballad or a dance number. It's a pure, unadulterated guilty pleasure and some of the best manufactured mainstream dance-pop of the late '90s. "

- Stephen Thomas Erlewine : Allmusic
