The Spice Girls [ Spais gɜ: lz ] are a five-piece British pop - girl group . The band formed in London in 1994 and released their debut single Wannabe on Virgin Records in 1996 , which reached number 1 in the charts in over 30 countries and made the band internationally known. Her three studio albums - from which ten singles were extracted - sold 53 million copies worldwide. In total, the band has sold over 59 million records to date.

The band members are also known by nicknames given to them by Top of the Pops Magazine in 1996 and picked up by management and the media: Melanie Brown (also Mel B) alias Scary Spice , Emma Bunton alias Baby Spice , Geri Halliwell alias Ginger Spice , Victoria Adams alias Posh Spice and Melanie Chisholm (also Mel C) alias Sporty Spice .

After Halliwell's departure in 1998 and the announcement of a break from the band in 2001, the members started solo careers. In 2007 they went on their last joint world tour with the original line-up and a greatest hits album. The world tour was a success and grossed over $ 100 million.

The five band members got together again in June 2012 to perform their musical Viva Forever! to apply. In August 2012, they performed a medley at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics . Another tour followed in the United Kingdom in 2019, the four of which took place without Victoria Beckham.

history

1994–1996: beginnings

The band was founded in 1994 through an advertisement in The Stage magazine by Bob Herbert and his son Chris, who run the management company Safe , formerly Heart Management .

In the 1980s, Bob Herbert had the boy band Bros founded. They wanted to start a pure girl group and received more than 600 applications. 300 were invited to a casting on March 4, 1994 at Dance Works Studio on Oxford Street, London. Originally, the group called Touch ended up being Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams, Lianne Morgan, Melanie Brown and Michelle Stephenson. The band moved into a row house in Maidenhead owned by Chic Murphy, where they were subsidized by Heart Management and each member took out unemployment benefits. Due to her age, Lianne was replaced by the management after one month for Melanie Chisholm, who was three years her junior.

For the next two months the band worked on demos and dance routines at Trinity Studios in Woking , Surrey. In mid-July 1994 the team was expanded to include the singing teacher Pepi Lemer . According to Stephenson, the material given to the group was "very, very young pop" and included the song We're Gonna Make It Happen , which was never released. It quickly became apparent that Stephenson couldn't keep up with the energy of the other four. Bob Herbert stated that “She just didn't fit in. She would never have fitted in, so I had to fire her ”. Stephenson stated that she left the band because of her mother who had cancer. This was later denied by Victoria, who said Stephenson "was just unable" to put the work into the group like the rest of them did.

The Herberts were looking for a replacement and wanted to sign Abigail Kas first. They agreed with her, but Kas canceled due to concerns of her boyfriend a day later. Then the 18-year-old Emma Bunton was suggested by the singing teacher Pepi Lemer. She impressed the Herberts and met the band in July 1994, who welcomed them with open arms: "I knew immediately she was the right one," said Halliwell.

After Bunton joined the group, dissatisfaction built up between the group and management. The group felt insecure because they did not have a contract and were frustrated with the direction Heart Management was taking them. They convinced Bob Herberts to perform in front of around 100 invited representatives from the media and record industry, music publishers and show agencies at Momis Studios in Shepherd's Bush , where they received an "overwhelmingly positive" response. Because of the great interest in the group, the Herberts wanted to create a binding contract as quickly as possible. Spurred on by the success achieved at the performance, the band members delayed the signing of the contract due to the advice of, among others, Victoria's father Tony Adams. In March 1995 the band left Heart Management because they could not realize their visions and ideas there. The group stole the masters recordings from the administrative offices to ensure they were in control of their own work. On the same day, the young women tracked down producer Eliot Kennedy , who was also there for their performance, and convinced him to work with the group.

Armed with a catalog of demos and dance routines, the band began roaming management agencies in October 1994. The group was invited by music producer Absolute , which in turn attracted the attention of Simon Fuller . The five then began working with Fuller and signed a contract with him in March 1995. During the summer of 1995 the group toured record labels in London and Los Angeles, and eventually signed a deal with Virgin Records in September 1995 . From then until the summer of 1996, the women wrote and recorded songs for their debut album while touring extensively the west coast of America, where they signed a recording deal with Windswept Pacific .

1996–1997: Spice and the breakthrough

The Spice Girls live in West Mac Laren (1997)

On July 8, 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut single Wannabe . The song became a worldwide hit and reached number 1 on the music charts in numerous countries . In the weeks leading up to its release, the video had dominated the music channels. In Great Britain, the song entered the charts at number 3, reached the top a week later and was able to assert itself there for seven weeks. The song became a number 1 hit in over 30 countries, including Germany. Not only did it become the best-selling single by a girl group, it also became the fastest-selling debut single of all time. With Wannabe , the Spice Girls were able to break into the difficult US market and enter the Hot 100 at number 11. The placement was the highest debut entry by any British act at the time. The Beatles previously held the record with I Want to Hold Your Hand at number 12. Four weeks after their US entry, the Spice Girls landed there at number 1 on the charts.

In November 1996 the Spice Girls released their debut album Spice in Europe. In Germany, the Spice Girls reached number 6 in the charts. The success was unprecedented and made comparisons to Beatlemania due to the great interest in the group (one spoke of "Spicemania"). In just seven weeks, Spice sold 1.8 million copies in the UK alone, making the Spice Girls the fastest-selling act since the Beatles. Overall, the first album Spice was a worldwide success with 23 million records sold.

Following on from these successes, the Spice Girls released their next singles Say You'll Be There and 2 Become 1 in October and December . The two singles continue the group's remarkable sales by charting in more than 53 countries and cementing the group's reputation as the biggest pop act on the planet. The last release from Spice was the double A-side Mama / Who Do You Think You Are , which reached number 4 in the charts in Germany.

1997–1998: Spiceworld and Halliwell's exit

In November 1997 the Spice Girls released their second album called Spiceworld . After the previous release of the first single Spice Up Your Life , the album turned out to be a global bestseller. It set a new record for being the fastest-selling album, selling seven million copies in two weeks. Thanks to positive reviews, the album was sold more than ten million times in Europe, Canada and the USA. In America, however, it was criticized that the group released their second album just nine months after their debut. The consequences of their media over-presence began to have an impact in Europe as well. They were increasingly criticized for their more than 20 advertising contracts. This fact led to lower international chart positions, yet the Spice Girls remained the top-selling pop group in both 1997 and 1998.

The singles Too Much and Viva Forever , which were also decoupled from the album , reached the top of the British singles charts. The single stop made it to number 2.

In June 1997, the group began filming their debut film Spice World . The film was supposed to accompany the second album of the same name and its content was based on the Beatles film Yeah Yeah Yeah . The upbeat comedy was meant to reflect the spirit of the Spice Girls and featured numerous guest appearances, including Roger Moore , Elton John , Jennifer Saunders , Richard E. Grant , Michael Barrymore and Meat Loaf . Was released as a film in December 1997, he proved to be a box office hit, the nearly 30 million US dollars in the US, eleven million pounds over 70 million dollars grossed in the UK and worldwide. Nevertheless, the film was nominated seven times for the Golden Raspberry in 1999, with the group collectively "winning" the award for "Worst Actress".

On November 7, 1997, the Spice Girls fired their manager and mentor, Simon Fuller. According to their various autobiographies, it was mainly Halliwell and Brown who pushed for Fuller's dismissal. They criticized him for having become too controlling and for restricting their personal and artistic freedom. The group then began to self-manage. Each member of the group had a specific area of responsibility: Brown was in charge of the tour, Halliwell was in charge of sponsorship deals, Bunton was in charge of staff, schedule and charities, Beckham was in charge of sales, and Chisholm was in charge of the record company, singles and formats. They later formed their own team, led by Nancy Phillips, to handle their business affairs.

In early 1998 the Spice Girls embarked on their world tour that would include 102 sold-out concerts in Europe and North America. The Spiceworld tour began on February 24, 1998 in Dublin, Ireland, continued across mainland Europe, and then returned to the UK for 14 concerts at Wembley Arena and the NEC Arena in Birmingham. Here studio recordings were made for a planned live album, which was commented by the group as follows: “We showed everyone that we can sing live, that's why we now want to make a live album for our fans.” Although recordings were made however, the idea was rejected again.

Later that year, the Spice Girls were invited to play the official English song for the 1998 World Cup , How Does It Feel Like to Be on Top of the World? to record. However, the song was overtaken in the charts by a new recording of Three Lions , the official English anthem for the European Football Championship in 1996 by the two comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and the Liverpool band The Lightning Seeds . The official song was also hit in the charts by Fat Les' Vindaloo , another unofficial anthem. The result was that the official song was completely ignored and quickly forgotten. As during a friendly against Portugal How Does It Feel Like to Be on Top of the World? was played, the audience drowned out the song by singing Three Lions to make fun of the official song. The single stayed in the UK's top 40 for just three weeks, despite the Spice Girls' massive efforts to promote the song.

In May 1998 the group confirmed in an interview in This Morning in England that the band was working on their third album, which should be different from the two previous albums. The album should consist of various solo songs, duets and group songs to give the women the opportunity to release their own music while still staying together as a band. This concept was never realized, however, as Halliwell's exit threw the group plans overboard.

At the end of the European part of the tour, Geri Halliwell missed the last two final shows in the Norwegian capital Oslo . Gastroenteritis was given as the official reason for this . However, rumors quickly circulated that Halliwell had distanced himself from the group and was planning to leave. The rumors got louder when they stayed away from another gig where the group wanted to introduce their new single Viva Forever .

On May 31, 1998, two weeks before the start of the sold out US tour, Halliwell announced that she was leaving the group. Through her attorney, Julian Turton, she let it be known: “Sadly, I have to announce that I have left the Spice Girls. This happens because of differences between us. I am sure that the group will continue to be successful and I wish them all the best. "

Halliwell claimed that she was suffering from exhaustion and wanted to take some time off. However, rumors persisted that she had fallen out with one of the band members, presumably Mel B. However, this has not been confirmed in the biographies of Victoria Beckham and Melanie Brown. Geri Halliwell's exit rocked fans and became one of the biggest entertainment news items of the year, making headlines around the world. The remaining four members announced that they would continue as a group and the planned US tour would take place as planned. However, Halliwell's departure overturned most of the group's plans. He was given as the reason why the planned live album was canceled. It also meant that most of the material they had recorded at Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios in early 1998 was scrapped. A rumored animated project by Disney was also not realized.

Viva Forever was the last single released from Spiceworld . The video was completed before Geri Halliwell left and showed the women in animated form, as they did not have time to shoot a video themselves due to the world tour. Actually, a double A-side with Never Give Up on the Good Times was planned, but this could not be realized due to time problems. The band didn't have time to re-record Halliwell's parts or make a video for the song. During the tour in America, the Spice Girls recorded more material and released the new song Goodbye for Christmas 1998 . Although the song was written before Halliwell left, it was still seen as a tribute to her and landed again at the top of the UK charts. The song became one of the most successful songs in Canada, where it stayed at number 1 for 16 weeks.

1999-2000: Forever

The Spice Girls as a quartet with Holler in Cologne

In late 1999 the Spice Girls started their Christmas in Spiceworld tour with performances in London and Manchester . The band returned to the Brit Awards in 2000 and it was announced that they had received an Outstanding Contribution Award . Although Geri Halliwell was in attendance, she did not join her former band members on stage.

In November 2000, the Spice Girls released their third album Forever . With a new R&B sound, the album received average reviews and achieved only a fraction of the success of its two predecessors.

In order to do more international advertising, the band split up and traveled to different countries for promotional purposes. Victoria and Emma toured North America while Mel B and Mel C focused on Europe. In the US, the album reached number 39 on the Billboard 200 album chart. In the UK, Westlife released their album Coast To Coast that same week . The chart duel received a lot of media coverage and Westlife eventually won the battle for the top of the chart, while the Spice Girls took second place.

This publication, which was actually planned as a reason for a comeback, actually sealed the end of the Spice Girls. In addition to Holler and Let Love Lead the Way , Tell Me Why , If You Wanna Have Some Fun and Weekend Love were planned as singles and had already been put into circulation as promo CDs. A video was even produced for If You Wanna Have Some Fun , but it was only briefly on MTV UK's playlist. The "Forever Project" was abandoned by the girls in favor of solo careers.

In February 2001, the Spice Girls announced that they would be taking a break from the band to focus on their solo careers. There was no official band dissolution.

2007–2008: Return of the Spice Girls tour and greatest hits

The Spice Girls in London on January 6, 2008

In 2004, following efforts to reunite Take That , Simon Fuller approached the former members to reunite the group. A reunion of the band did not take place, however, because Melanie C was not ready at the time.

“The Spice Girls were amazing and I'm proud to have been a part of them. But now we are all older and have changed so much that I think it was a very nice part in my life, but in the past. "

The plan of a comeback and the release of a greatest hits album has long been discussed in the media, but was first officially confirmed by Melanie Brown in June 2005. Right before a planned reunion due to Live 8 (which didn't materialize because of Brown's contractual obligations), she said, “We'll be back because we all want to. I know everyone is for it. There will be a greatest hits album and we have tons of new songs that no one has heard before. "

On June 28, 2007, all five band members finally announced their comeback in a press conference in London at the Royal Observatory. Unlike Take That, the comeback shouldn't be a reunion, but a final farewell. The comeback included a world tour that started on December 2nd in Vancouver. The tour included songs from all three Spice Girls albums and tells the story of the band in a storyline.

The Spice Girls performing at the 2012 Olympic Games closing show

In November 2007, a greatest hits album was released. Her first official documentary followed in December in collaboration with Bob Smeaton ( Beatles Anthology , Who's Next ).

On October 5th, Melanie C announced in an interview with Scott Mills on Radio 1 that the new Spice Girls single is to be called Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) and will be released on November 19th, 2007. It was also announced that it would be the official single for Children in Need 2007 and that part of the proceeds will benefit it. A total of two new songs were released on the Greatest Hits album, which was released on November 12, 2007. Headlines entered the British pop charts at number 11.

In early February 2008 it was announced that the Spice Girls would end their tour early on February 26 in Toronto . The official reason for the cancellation of further concerts were “family and personal obligations”.

2012: Summer Olympics and Viva Forever musical

The Spice Girls at the premiere of the musical Viva Forever! in London (2012)

On August 12, 2012, the band made a one-off comeback at the final show of the Olympic Games in London.

In December 2012, the Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! in London's West End theater district, hosted by Mamma Mia! -Author Jennifer Saunders was brought onto the stage with producer Judy Craymer . The Spice Girls were involved in the production and appeared at the premiere, among others. The musical tells the story of the protagonist Viva and her friends who take part in a television casting show. As a result of bad reviews and sluggish ticket sales, the musical was canceled after only seven months.

2016–2017: Wannabe 's 20th anniversary and failed comeback plans

Together with former Spice Girls producer Eliot Kennedy , Geri Horner, Melanie Brown and Emma Bunton recorded new songs in May 2016 in London's 'Deep Play' studios. On July 8, 2016, the 20th anniversary of the single Wannabe , they released a video under the acronym GEM , which consists of the first letters of the three band members, in which they announced a surprise for the band's anniversary of the Spice Girls. Victoria Beckham, who was too busy with her clothing line, and Melanie C, who decided against the comeback in favor of her solo career, were not involved in the comeback.

The UN used the song Wannabe for their # whatireallyreallywant campaign, which campaigns for women's rights internationally. The video shot for this, in which the “Global Goals” are explained, was shown in cinemas worldwide between July and September 2016.

On November 23, 2016, the trio leaked a demo version of the song Song for Her on the Internet. Since Geri Horner became a mother again in January 2017 and Emma Bunton decided to continue her family planning shortly afterwards, the comeback plans were declared over in March 2017.

2018–2019: Reunion without Victoria Beckham

The Spice Girls at Wembley Stadium during their Spiceworld tour (2019)

On November 5, 2018, the band announced on their Instagram account that they would be giving concerts over the course of a stadium tour in 2019. In addition to Geri Horner , Melanie Brown and Emma Bunton , Melanie Chisholm is also involved in the comeback. Victoria Beckham will not be there. The original six concerts sold out within minutes, which is why an additional show in Coventry and two additional concerts each in Manchester and London have been added. A show in Croke Park in Dublin (Ireland) was also added, which was also sold out within a very short time. Dates in other European countries have not yet been confirmed.

meaning

Girl power

The exclamation of Girl Power ! (often along with the Victory mark ) became a trademark of the band and was viewed both positively and negatively.

The phrase was a sign of the feminism of the new age and was meant to express that modern girls and women are good, strong, desirable and together unbeatable. This wasn't a new concept in the pop world, as both Madonna and Bananarama had expressed similar views. What was new, however, was that the consistent presentation of Girl Power formed the focus of a band. Geri Halliwell said:

We want girls all over the world to discover their power and become Spice Girls. We're not just a band. The Spice Girls are a movement, a kind of religious cult, just a lot funnier. "

The Spice Girls propagated the importance of strong, loyal friendship among women to girls, adolescents and adult women and created the “10 Golden Rules of Girl Power ”:

  1. Be positive.
  2. Be strong.
  3. Don't let anyone put you down.
  4. Guide your life and your destiny.
  5. Support your friends ...
  6. ... and let them support you.
  7. Give your opinion
  8. Approach your life with confidence.
  9. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something just because you're a girl.
  10. Have fun!

Some critics no longer saw this as shallow marketing, while others saw the sometimes provocative outfits of the Spice Girls as problematic and feared a negative impact, especially on easily influenced young girls. Even so, the term became a cultural phenomenon and has been adopted by millions of girls and even included in the Oxford English Dictionary .

Gay icons

The members of the Spice Girls are revered as gay icons, especially in Great Britain. It is said that they had something that was a perfect fit with the gay community and that was a big part of their success. They embodied glamor and self-confidence, loved playing with disguises and sex.

Geri joked about her appearance as Ginger at the Video Music Awards in 1998 after she left the band: "As you have noticed, I am no longer dressed like a drag queen ." In an interview, Emma Bunton said when asked, why the Spice Girls have so many gay fans: “We are really flattered to have such a large gay fan base because they know about fashion and songs. I feel so flattered that we have such a large gay following, it's great! "

In a market survey conducted by the onepoll.com website on the 50 biggest gay icons, in which over 5,000 gays and lesbians took part, Victoria Beckham came in 12th and Geri Halliwell in 43rd.

Victoria Beckham parodied her diva image in her video Let Your Head Go by making fun of acting like the US film diva Joan Crawford . She is friends with Elton John , who already performed the song Don't Go Breaking My Heart with the band during the Spice Girls days and who made a guest appearance in the film Spice World .

Geri Halliwell released the song GAY as the B-side of Mi Chico Latino in 1999 and the gay anthem It's Raining Men in 2001 .

Tours

Girl power! Live in Istanbul (1997)

The first tour of the most successful girl group of the 1990s. Only two concerts were given in Istanbul in October 1997.

It is assumed, however, that the Pepsi tour only served as a dress rehearsal for the Spiceworld World Tour , which began four months later , which is why a venue was chosen that was a bit apart from the countries in which the Spice Girls are their largest target group and most fans had.

By publishing the concerts on the video Girl Power! Ticket sales for the following world tour were additionally boosted live in Istanbul .

Spiceworld Tour (1998)

The Spiceworld Tour was the first world tour in the Spice Girls' career . The tour's main sponsors were Pepsi , Unilever ( Impulse Bodyspray ), Aprilia and Polaroid . The tour, including all US concerts, was completely sold out.

Tickets for the first two concerts in Dublin were sold out within two hours. For several concerts in North America - such as Los Angeles and Philadelphia - tickets were sold out within minutes. In New York City , the Spice Girls set the record for the fastest sold-out concert: 13,000 tickets for New York's Madison Square Garden were sold in less than 12 minutes.

The tour was so successful that 15 additional concerts were added in Great Britain, which were also sold out within a few hours. The last concert of the Spiceworld Tour was played in front of more than 50,000 fans at London's Wembley Stadium . A total of 97 concerts were given from late February to mid-October 1998.

The three concerts of the Spiceworld tour in Frankfurt am Main , Munich and Dortmund remained in addition to a TV appearance on December 13, 1997 at Wetten, dass ..? in the Mannheim Maimarkthalle the only appearances of the Spice Girls in Germany.

Christmas in Spiceworld Tour (UK) (1999)

1999 was the last year the group gave concerts: eight sold-out shows at London's Earls Court and the Manchester Evening News Arena in December. This tour was carried out with a very elaborate stage show and on a round stage. A special concert in the new Millennium Stadium was planned for July 2000, but was later canceled on the grounds that they wanted to bring the new album onto the market first.

The Return of the Spice Girls - World Tour 2007/2008

After ten years, the Spice Girls went on another world tour that spanned five continents. The concert at The O₂ in London on December 15, 2007 was sold out in just 38 seconds. 16 more concerts were then added for London and more for Manchester, all of which were sold out in a very short time. Initially, only eleven concerts were planned for the entire tour, but due to popular demand, the tour was expanded to 47 concerts. The only concert in Germany took place on December 20, 2007 in the Kölnarena in Cologne.

Spice World - 2019 UK Tour

More than ten years after their last comeback, Mel B, Mel C, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton are regrouping to go on a tour of the United Kingdom together. Victoria Beckham alone denied being part of this reunion in advance. The tour included 13 concerts with all additional shows, one of them in Croke Park in Dublin . At Wembley Stadium in London alone , three concerts took place on three consecutive days. British singer Jess Glynne appeared as a special guest .
