BRIT Awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BRIT Awards are the most prestigious prize in British pop music and roughly comparable to the US Grammy . The award was presented in 1977 as the BPI Awards announced for the first time, on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The letters stood for B ritish P honographic I ndustry. Five years later, the event became an annual facility. Since 1989 the award ceremony has been called "The BRIT Awards" (BRIT is an acronym for British Record Industry Trust ). The winners are determined with the strong participation of the record companies, which repeatedly leads to heated discussions about the worthiness of the winners. For this reason, the Mercury Music Prize was launched as an alternative in 1992 .

The event where the prizes are awarded is often the scene of scandals and unplanned surprises. For example, The KLF teamed up with the grindcore formation Extreme Noise Terror in 1992 , shot into the crowd with submachine guns and blank cartridges and left after a two-and-a-half-minute grindcore version of their hit 3 AM Eternal and the concluding announcement “The KLF has now left the music business “the stage. Those in charge of the BBC were just able to prevent the band from pouring blood from buckets onto the audience, but the band left behind a sheep carcass at the aftershow party with a note saying “I died for you. Bon appetit ”.

At the 2010 awards ceremony, Liam Gallagher caused a scandal when he insulted his brother Noel and threw his trophy and microphone into the audience.

Since the BRIT Awards in 1989, which were moderated by Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood and which resulted in numerous breakdowns, the event was initially no longer broadcast live on television. It wasn't until 2007 that they could be seen again live on ITV .

In 1994, the New Musical Express launched the counter-event Brat Awards after the then thriving Britpop scene was completely ignored at the BRIT Awards.
