Brockhampton (stylized as BROCKHAMPTON ) is an American hip hop collective. The group founded by Kevin Abstract in Texas and now operating in Los Angeles consists of a total of 13 members, including several rappers and producers as well as graphic and effects artists. In 2018, the self-proclaimed boy band , which also sees itself as an autonomous enterprise , achieved their commercial breakthrough with their fourth studio album within a few months. Her major label debut Iridescence was released on RCA Records and reached number one on the Billboard charts , where it stayed for three weeks.

Band history

Formation and all-American trash

Brockhampton arose from a thread on the Kanye West - Fansite KanyeToThe.com out. The Corpus Christi native Clifford Ian Simpson alias Kevin Abstract (* 1996) posted the text "Anyone wanna make a band?" In 2012 and then gathered around a 40-strong collective of music enthusiasts who called themselves AliveSinceForever . In 2013 a self-titled EP was released online . In the following year, Abstract, who was now active as a solo artist, renamed the group after his former residential street in Brockhampton . The first concrete line- up with members from various US states , Northern Ireland and Grenada met on New Year's Day 2015 in San Marcos . Shortly thereafter published Brockhampton their debut single bet I . In the middle of the year they won the VFILE Loud! Talent search and released the single Dirt via Fool's Gold Records and finally their first mixtape in March 2016 under the title All-American Trash .

Saturation trilogy

The group, consisting of more than a dozen members, moved to Los Angeles , where they share a house. Before they even recorded any songs, Brockhampton announced their debut album Saturation on social media . A TV show called American Boyband , which was produced during Kevin Abstract's solo tour in 2016, was broadcast on the album's release date in June 2017. The fully autonomously produced album was created in just three weeks. The seven stage artists rapped and sang their verses alternately into a microphone in a bedroom one, as in the making of the Saturation - box set can be seen.

Contrary to the original plans, Saturation became a trilogy . Only ten weeks after the publication of the first part Brockhampton celebrated with Saturation II her first chart success . The album rose to number 57 on the Billboard 200 and, like its predecessor, received good reviews.

After the band had produced at least 14 music videos in 2017 and increased their level of awareness through intensive online presence, the third and last part of the album trilogy was released in December - within a good six months. The Saturation III , which was recorded in just three weeks, reached number 15 on the Billboard 200 and gave Brockhampton a further boost. At the beginning of 2018, the group had an appearance on the new edition of the MTV show Total Request Live , in which the blue-painted members in orange jumpsuits jump out of a black van into Times Square and sing their song Boogie in front of a cheering audience .

Iridescence

Brockhampton announced their fourth studio album, Team Effort , in an online statement in December 2017 . Shortly before the planned release date in the following March, however, a postponement was announced: "Team Effort was scheduled to be released next week, but we spoke to God and She told us to save the album for another time". A few days later it was announced that Brockhampton had signed a $ 15 million record deal with RCA Records .

In May 2018 the publication with the working title Puppy was announced again. However, due to the exclusion of founding member Ameer Vann, the date was delayed again. The 21-year-old rapper, who gained particular fame as the cover face of the Saturation trilogy, was accused of sexual misconduct by various women. An ex-girlfriend described him as "emotionally manipulative" and "psychologically abusive" and accused him of a relationship with a minor, which he denied. The band apologized for Vann's behavior and canceled the remaining appearances on their US tour.

After Brockhampton first appeared on the Tonight Show in June with their song Tonya , they followed up on their first European tour in August with concert stops in Scandinavia , Germany and England . The RCA debut album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London and in Hawaii and was eventually titled Iridescence . It's supposed to be part of another trilogy called The Best Years of Our Lives and hit number one on the Billboard charts straight away in September 2018. In the first week alone, it sold over 100,000 times across the country. At the end of the year, the track Boogie was used in the Christmas film The Grinch .

At the beginning of 2019 Brockhampton were nominated for a BRIT Award in the group international category.

Ginger

Over the course of the following summer Brockhampton released three singles and finally their fifth studio album Ginger on August 23, 2019 . Kevin Abstract compared the sound of the album in the run-up to its release with the OutKast hit Hey Ya! and said that one wanted to combine serious lyrics with danceable songs.

Brockhampton call themselves the "All-American Boyband" or "Best Boy Band since One Direction ". With the use of the boy band term one wants to bring about a redefinition of the same and musically not be reduced to hip-hop. Above all, the group's DIY ethos with self-written and self-produced material clearly distinguishes them from a stereotypical boy band. In the media, comparisons are made with the rap collectives Odd Future and A $ AP Mob, even though the members of Brockhampton are less uniform and more focused on a common product. In addition, the non-musicians working in the background are also seen as full band members. The band sees itself not only as a musical and artistic collective, but also as an enterprise in the style of Paramount or Apple and uses the new media intensively to expand its fan base.

"Brockhampton is a one-stop shop: a boyband and the enterprise that produces the boyband. It's an artistic project with a horizon that exceeds music. For Brockhampton, the lines separating musician, media company, and film studio are just questions of will and ambition. "

“Brockhampton are a one stop shop : a boy band and the enterprise that makes them. It's an art project with a horizon that transcends music. For Brockhampton, the lines that separate musicians, media companies and film studios are just questions of will and ambition. "

- Jorge Cotte (Complex)

According to their own statements, the aspiring pop stars' goal is to break existing norms and create a legacy. The website Vulture.com calls the rise of Brockhampton a "shift change" in hip-hop culture.

Music and videos

The group is difficult to assign to a single style of music and is mainly associated with the genres of Alternative Hip-Hop , Alternative R&B and Pop-Rap . Due to the different musical backgrounds of the band members - four of them played together in a grunge band - influences from pop , rock and later also grime flow into the work. The varied texts deal in particular with topics of growing up such as being different and self-acceptance . Mastermind Kevin Abstract openly addresses his homosexuality , particularly explicitly in the song Junky , for example , which says “Why you always rap about being gay? / 'Cause not enough niggas rappin' be gay / Where I come from, niggas get called 'fagot' and killed / So I'ma get head from a nigga right here. ”Singer and guitarist Bearface aka Ciarán Ruaridh McDonald is for his indie -Ballads known, each of which marks the end of the three Saturation albums.

A significant part of the artistic output are the numerous vlogs and music videos that Brockhampton publishes on its YouTube channel. The colorful films in 4: 3 format are mostly made in the vicinity of the band house in South Central Los Angeles and are reminiscent of MTV in its heyday. They often contain absurd elements and show the band members in blue body paint and / or orange jumpsuits, performing or robbing a pawnbroker . The storylines tie in with the short films Helmet Boy and Billy Star . Web designer Robert “Roberto” Ontenient can be heard on some skits and at the beginning of many videos in his native Spanish (“Me llamo Roberto”). Kevin Abstract (director), Ashlan Gray (camera) and Henock "HK" Sileshi (editor) were responsible for creating the music videos. Creative assistant and app developer Kevin Doan often spends the band's live concerts in the press pit and streams cell phone recordings of the audience onto a screen behind the stage.
