Corpus Christi [ ˌkɔːɹpɪsˈkɹɪsti ] ( Eng . "Corpus Christi") is a port city in the US state of Texas . In 2016, the city had 325,733 residents, making it the eighth largest in Texas.

History and culture

Corpus Christi was founded in 1839 by Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney as Kinney's Ranch or Kinney's Trading Post to sell arms to the Mexican revolutionaries . However, the history goes back to the 16th century.

name of the city

The city is named after Corpus Christi Bay , which was discovered in 1519 by the Spaniard Alonso Álvarez de Pineda on the feast of Corpus Christi and was therefore named (Latin for "body of Christ").

The epithet Sparkling City by the Sea ("the glittering city by the sea") is used primarily by the tourism industry .

USS Lexington (2017)

The National Park Service has identified a National Historic Landmark for Corpus Christi with the USS Lexington . A total of 15 structures and sites are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of November 28, 2018).

Geography and climate

Corpus Christi is located on the bay of the same name, near the mouth of the Nueces River .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​1,192 km², of which 400.5 km² is land and 791.5 km² (66.4%) is water. Drinking water is ensured by two reservoirs, Lake Corpus Christi and the Choke Canyon Reservoir. The city is also supplied with water by a 101-mile pipeline from Lake Texana .

Sports

Corpus Christi, like most American cities, owns several sports clubs and teams. Although only one team plays in a major league (first division) - the indoor football team - there are several second and third class teams.

Economy and Infrastructure

The port of Corpus Christi is the sixth largest seaport in the United States in terms of tons handled and is located on the northern edge of the city. The sea port, which is only used as a freight port, was opened in 1926.

Transport links

The city has an international airport, Corpus Christi International Airport (ICAO: KCRP). Major highways near Corpus Christi are Interstate 10 , Interstate 410 , Interstate 35, and Interstate 37 . In addition, some US routes run near the city.

Industry

The Austrian steel company voestalpine built a direct reduction plant in Corpus Christi in 2014 . The plant is designed for an annual capacity of two million tons of HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron - porous sponge iron that is pressed into briquettes) and has direct deep-sea access to the Gulf of Mexico. At EUR 550 million (USD 740 million), this is the largest foreign investment in the history of the voestalpine Group. Around half of the annual capacity at HBI is shipped to Linz and Donawitz, where it is incorporated into voestalpine's production. A total of 150 new jobs were created by the plant.
