geography

The city is located directly on Aransas Bay , which is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the offshore San José Island . Rockport is located approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Corpus Christi and 200 kilometers southeast of San Antonio . The Texas State Highway 35 runs right through Rockport.

history

Rockport was founded on May 29, 1871 and designated the administrative seat of Aransas County. The name of the port city ( port ) was because of the cliffs ( rock ledge selected on the shore). The place was initially known for its slaughterhouses and port facilities. Shipbuilding, livestock and fishing were the main livelihoods of the residents. After a railway line reached the town in 1886, tourism also flourished. In the 1940s, the processing was prawns ( shrimps ), another important industry.

Due to the mild climate and the idyllic location, Rockport increasingly developed into the retirement home of wealthy Americans, causing the population to rise sharply. The place is also known as The Texas Riviera .

Rockport was badly hit by Hurricane Harvey on August 26-27, 2017 .

Historic buildings and landmarks

The Hoopes-Smith House and TH Mathis House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Aransas County . North of Rockport in Goose Island State Park is the location of a Virginia oak ( Quercus virginiana ), the age of which is stated to be more than a thousand years.

Demographic data

In 2013 a population of 10,036 people was determined. This corresponds to a population increase of 35.9% compared to the year 2000 and is due to the influx of many senior citizens. The average age of 50.6 years in 2013 was therefore significantly above the value of Texas, which was 30.8 years.
