Alonso Álvarez de Pineda
Alonso Álvarez de Pineda ( Aldeacentenera , 1494 - † 1520 on the Río Pánuco - near today's Tampico ) was a Spanish conquistador .
He was commissioned in 1519 by the governor of Jamaica, Francisco de Garay, with the detailed exploration of Florida , which was discovered by Juan Ponce de León in 1513 . Coming from Jamaica , bypassing Cuba to the west, Pineda probably reached the Gulf coast of Florida in Apalchee Bay. Then he headed west and discovered the mouth of the Mississippi River and then traveled to the mouth of the Río Pánuco - at today's Tampico . There he was then supposed to set up a branch on behalf of Garay in 1520, but died in a conflict with the Indian residents. The popular uprising against the Spanish conquistadors was suppressed by Hernán Cortés .
