history
The Woodlands was founded in 1974 by oil entrepreneur George P. Mitchell , and was managed by The Woodlands Corporation , which was subordinate to Mitchell's Mitchell Energy & Development company . Together with the landscape architect Ian McHarg, Mitchell developed a master plan which, in addition to the creation of living space in various equipment standards, focused on the protection of nature, the preservation of trees and protection from flooding. In addition to housing, a conference center, shopping centers, schools, hotels, office buildings, production buildings and golf courses were to be built.
Woodlands Corporation was acquired on July 31, 1997 by a joint venture between the Morgan Stanley Group and Crescent Real Estate Equities . In December 2003, the Rouse Company took over the shares of Crescent Real Estate Equities in the Woodlands.
Mitchell originally planned that The Woodlands should be part of the city of Houston . In the middle of the 2000s, a movement formed among the residents who wanted The Woodlands to achieve the status of an independent city. Since this project required the approval of the city of Houston and the state of Texas , Senator Tommy Williams and MP Robert Eissler submitted bills to their respective chambers in 2007 , which provided for the expansion of the improvement district and enabled the community to levy sales tax. An agreement was reached with the city of Houston to release The Woodlands from jurisdiction of the city of Houston and to establish a city government. In return, was the payment of 16 million US dollars established at the city of Houston a fund that can freely dispose of the Houston. A similar agreement was made with the city of Conroe . A mutual fund was created through a deposit of $ 320,000 by The Woodlands. In return, The Woodlands will not be incorporated into the Conroe municipality.
On September 13, 2008, The Woodlands was hit by Hurricane Ike . In addition to several thousand fallen trees and power lines, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion , a cultural venue near Lake Woodlands, was badly damaged.
