Conroe is the district capital and seat of the county seat of Montgomery County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located on Interstate 45 almost centrally in the county, in southeast Texas, is about 100 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has a total area of 98.1 km 2 , of which 0.2 km 2 is water.
history
The area was first settled around 1830. The town was named after Isaac Conroe , a lumberjack who came to the area in 1881 and built a sawmill on Stewarts Creek , with which he supplied the International Great Northern Railroad with timber, with a small one Branch line connected its operation with the main line. In 1884 the first post office was opened in the sawmill.
Around 1885, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway expanded its network to include the Navasota - Montgomery route and the timber industry flourished again. In 1889 the population had risen to 300 and the city became the seat of the county government. In 1892 there were already five steam-powered mills. In the 1930s the city experienced an oil boom , at the top of which the population rose to over 10,000.

According to the 2000 census, 36,811 people lived here in 13,145 households and 8,728 families. The population density was 376.1 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 71.16% White, 11.13% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 13.38% other ethnic groups. About 2.93% were mixed race and 32.62% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,145 households, 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.5% of these were married couples living together. 13.5% were single mothers and 33.6% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.33 people.
28.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 13.4% 18 to 24, 31.6% 25 to 44, 17.3% 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 101.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 98.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 34,123 USD , and the median income for a family 37,201 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,468 versus $ 23,025 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,841. 19.3% of the population and 15.0% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 26.3% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.8% were 65 or older.
