Thomas K. Turnage (born June 27, 1923 in Conroe , Texas , † December 10, 2000 in Rancho Mirage , California ) was an American major general and administrator .

biography

Turnage joined the US Army in 1943 and took an active part in World War II and the Korean War. In 1982 he was retired from active military service with the rank of major general . For his military services he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the Bronze Star . After leaving the Army, he was director of the Selective Service and manager of a task force for planning tasks under Defense Minister Caspar Weinberger .

In 1986 he became head of the administrative authority of Veterans Affairs ( Veterans Administration ) and played as such a key role in transforming the authority into the United States Department of Veterans Affairs on March 15, 1989. At that time, the veterans authority, the largest independent government agency with more than 240,000 employees and an annual budget of more than 25 billion dollars . On March 1, 1989, Ed Derwinski succeeded him as head of the Veterans Office.
