Mario Schwarz (born July 16, 1945 in Vienna ) is an Austrian art historian .

Life

Mario Schwarz is the son of Anton Theodor Schwarz and Maria Schwarz, née Bellella. Both parents worked as a painter and graphic artist, on his mother's side he is the heir to a traditional Viennese chimney sweep company.

After attending elementary school in Vienna-Neubau and the Bundesrealgymnasium Vienna VIII, Albertgasse (1955–1963), Schwarz passed the final exams in 1963 . From 1963 he attended the Technical University of Vienna and studied architecture, from 1967/1968 also art history and classical archeology at the University of Vienna . He did his doctorate in art history with Renate Wagner-Rieger and Gerhard Schmidt with the thesis Studies on Monastery Architecture in Austria under the last Babenbergers and received his doctorate in 1975 as Dr. phil.

From 1980 to 1983 he worked as a university lecturer at the Institute for Architecture, Monument Preservation and Art History at the Vienna University of Technology, and in 1984 he qualified as a university lecturer for medieval building research at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna. In addition to his teaching activities at the University of Vienna, Schwarz also read from 1987 to 1996 at the Institute for Art History at the University of Graz and at the Institute for Architecture, Monument Preservation and Art History at the Technical University of Vienna. From 1993 onwards he lectured abroad at the Comenius University in Bratislava, at the Charles University in Prague, at the University of Palermo and at the Università Europea di Roma. Lectures in symposia in Heidelberg, Jerusalem, Ljubljana, Paris (Sorbonne), Székesfehérvár, Uppsala and Zurich.

In 1993 he was awarded the professional title of Associate University Professor. In 1999 and 2003, Schwarz was elected a member of the Egyptian Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . The commemorative publication building research and monument preservation was dedicated to him on his 70th birthday .

From 1968 to 1972 Schwarz took part in research expeditions and archaeological excavations in Turkey , from 1976 to 1982 in the restoration project "Tomb of Ankh'Hor in Thebes-West (Egypt)" and in the excavations in Tell el-Dab'a (Egypt), in 1988 at excavations in Abu Fana (Egypt). Schwarz was and is also the head of numerous research projects, about 1992–1994 on the subject of “Computer-Aided Architectural Representation”, 1995–1996 on the subject of “the artistic work of Carl Auböck (1900-1957)” and 1996–1998 “Studies on the architecture of the 13th Century in Austria. ”The rock carvings from Sayala, the villa architecture of the turn of the century at Semmering, the historical building stock in the cellars of the inner city of Vienna and the medieval building history of the Vienna Hofburg are part of his work as project manager.
