Gerhard Schmidt (art historian)

Gerhard Schmidt (born May 11, 1924 in Vienna ; † April 3, 2010 ibid) was an Austrian university professor for art history at the University of Vienna . His main focus was on the Gothic , in particular on book illumination .

Life

Schmidt was born the son of a doctor and an elementary school teacher. After working and military service as well as being an American prisoner of war, he began studying medicine at the University of Vienna in 1946 . In 1947 he switched to archeology and art history . In 1951 he completed his studies with a dissertation on French relief sculpture.

He completed his habilitation in 1959 with the thesis "The Poor Bibles of the XIVth Century". In 1968 he was appointed full professor at the University of Vienna (retirement 1992). From 1973 he was a corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and was elected a full member in 1984.

Schmidt was buried at the Heiligenstädter Friedhof in Vienna.
