Renate Wagner-Rieger (born January 10, 1921 in Vienna ; † December 11, 1980 there ) was an Austrian art historian .

Life

Renate Rieger first attended a business school and did not take the external Matura until 1941 . From 1942 she studied art history with Hans Sedlmayr and Karl Oettinger . She received her doctorate in 1947 under Karl M. Swoboda with a dissertation on the facade of the Viennese residential building from the 16th to the middle of the 18th century.

Wagner-Rieger managed to rise from institute librarian to recognized researcher and professor. She worked as a lecturer , from 1964 as an associate professor and from 1971 to 1980 as a professor of art history at the University of Vienna .

Wagner-Rieger paid special attention to the previously neglected and partially devalued epoch of historicism (the division into Romantic Historicism, Strict Historicism and Late Historicism comes from her). She initiated the major research project “ Wiener Ringstrasse ” (1968ff.).

In 1976 Renate Wagner-Rieger was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for the Humanities .

Renate Wagner-Rieger had been married to the historian Walter Wagner since 1956 and was the mother of three children. She died after a short, serious illness a few weeks before her 60th birthday. She was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
