Walter Wagner (historian)

Walter Wagner (born January 13, 1923 in Vienna ; † June 11, 1989 there ) was an Austrian historian specializing in naval history . He was director of the war archive in Vienna.

Life

Wagner was born the son of a railway official. He attended the Schottengymnasium in the 1st district of Vienna ( Inner City ) and, after its dissolution, the Gymnasium IX ( Alsergrund ). After graduating from high school with distinction in 1941, he was called up for military service in the Wehrmacht , and in April 1945 was taken prisoner by the US in Italy (until December 1946).

From 1947 he studied history, philosophy and English at the University of Vienna , in 1951 he was " Emperor Franz Joseph and the German Empire from 1871 to 1914" to Dr. phil. PhD; He passed the rigorous exams with Hugo Hantsch , Leo Santifaller and Josef Keil . From 1951 to 1953 he completed the 46th training course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna (state examination). From 1953 to 1955 he was a scholarship holder of the Austrian Cultural Institute in Rome .

In 1956 he became an archivist in the war archive department of the Austrian State Archives , where he was in charge of the naval inventory from 1957 . In 1962 he was entrusted with the files of the central authorities. In 1966 he became provisional, in 1967 permanent deputy director (under Otto Friedrich Winter ) and in 1983 director. In 1988 the councilor retired.

From 1960 he was also a lecturer for the archive of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . He was also a member of the International Commission for Military History and Chairman of the Working Group for Austrian Naval History (from 1975). His articles appeared a. a. in the New German Biography .

Wagner, a Roman Catholic, was married to the art historian Renate Wagner-Rieger and had three children. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
