Career

Degenhardt (2016)

Degenhardt was born in East Berlin. During his childhood, both parents were arrested by the Ministry of State Security after an unanswered application to leave the country and a subsequent attempt to escape and were imprisoned for two years. Degenhardt spent the meantime with his grandmother. After the parents were able to travel to the Federal Republic of Germany in the course of the release of political prisoners, they submitted an application for family reunification. After another six months, the family found themselves together again in a refugee home in Bavaria. They later moved to Düsseldorf together. Following his community service in a nursing home , Degenhardt completed an apprenticeship as a nurse in a psychiatric clinic in Düsseldorf. He finally had to stop this because of his own drug use and a related psychosis . Subsequently, he worked in various video stores, among other things. However, his continued drug use led to another psychosis, after which Degenhardt took six years of therapy to complete.

In 2010 Degenhardt recorded his first song with Son of a Whore . This formed the basis of his debut album Harmonie Hurensohn . On this he appeared under the stage name Detlev Disko Degenhardt, which he shortened to Disko Degenhardt in the same year. When choosing his pseudonym, the rapper referred to the German songwriter Franz Josef Degenhardt . Following his solo album, he teamed up with rapper Loock and producer Hiro MA to form the group Johnny Was A Dancer . The first joint album named after the band was recorded in the Düsseldorf Schlachthof studio and released in 2010. In the following two years the solo albums Donna Klara and Harmonie Hurensohn II followed , which, like his debut album, were released both on CD and for free download. The EPs Destroy , for which guest contributions by NMZS , Demolition Dia and Loock had been recorded, and Destroy II were released exclusively for download . In the course of these publications, the rapper only appeared under the short form Degenhardt. On July 1, 2013, Johnny Jugend, the second album with his group Johnny Was a Dancer, was released . In July 2014, the solo album Harmonie Hurensohn 3 followed , on which Degenhardt first worked with the Kamikazes brothers.

At the end of 2015 Degenhardt signed a contract with the Melting Pot Music label . On March 11, 2016, Terror 22 followed the rapper's first album in regular stores. This was released in digital form as well as on CD and vinyl. With Fuck off , Fett & Rosig , Ich köte Spione and INZFTZ , four songs from the album were made into a video. Degenhardt traveled to Japan to implement Fett & Rosig . On August 12, 2016, a joint EP by Degenhardt and Kamikazes was released under the title Krahter for download and in a limited edition as vinyl . Music videos were created for the songs Names , Above Down , Muttis Jesus and Draw . In 2017 he changed his stage name to Destroy Degenhardt. In autumn he announced that he had signed a contract with the independent label Audiolith . In mid-September, Silke Bischoff Deluxe / Otaku Shore released the first video for the album Das Handbuch des Poisonmischers .

In 2019 he changed his name to vandalism and released the album Friends don't lie through Audiolith .

Style and reception

Degenhardt and Kamikazes (2016)

The stylistic classification of Degenhardt was repeatedly classified as difficult by music journalists. Some media drew comparisons with the US rapper Aesop Rock , the pop band Blumfeld and the German hip-hop musicians Grim104 and Private Paul. The e-zine Laut.de stated that Degenhardt's texts were told “from the perspective of the social outsider, the eccentric, the different”. He fights "with his feelings, with aggression or melancholy [...] against his inner weaker self, against depression [and] the social apocalypse." the stage design of a psychodrama that begins with the hope of his parents for a future that lies outside the target range of the wall riflemen of the GDR ”. The background music is formed by samples that make use of a wide range of " Conny Kramer and Ton Steine Scherben , anime series and underground films [up to] Neil Young , Jennifer Rostock or [...] Störkraft ". Degenhardt sees himself as a nerd who defines himself through music, films and literature. According to Rap.de, he sets a monument to this “cultural collecting rage” in the song Billy Idol . ”In the accompanying video, the rapper takes on the musicians Derek B , RA the Rugged Man , West Berlin Masculin , Eins Zwo , Die Kassierer , Hans Hartz , Tocotronic , Udo Lindenberg , Hollywood Hank and Mach One as well as the writers Haruki Murakami and Christian Kracht or the directors Spike Lee and Jim Jarmusch . From Julius Hagen's point of view, Degenhardt's “elaborate reference technique with which quotes from pop culture are woven into new contexts” works well and can be understood either as “ postmodern ” or as a “ patchwork quilt ”. In the best case scenario, "the fusion of samples and lyrics creates an intimidating, vulgar cosmos of symbols with the features of a modern menetek ". In public appearances, the rapper is always masked to protect his privacy. Usually he pulls a woolen hat over his face. He also keeps his real name a secret.
