West Berlin Masculine (often abbreviated as WBM ) was a Berlin rap formation that consisted of Kool Savas and Taktloss from 1997 to 2000 . With Hoes, Flows, Moneytoes , they laid the foundation for the battle rap culture that is present in Berlin today and thus for gangsta rap in Germany .
history
In the early 1990s, Kool Savas, enthusiastic about the then West Coast hip-hop , traveled with Fumanschu to Los Angeles , where he met local rap greats and their aggressive battlerap . Impressed by the eloquent punchlines of the Americans, Savas soon switched to his mother tongue, German, since this experience can only be perfected in his mother tongue after puns and puns. In 1997 MOR and Westberlin Masculin were founded by Savas, among others, and 50 copies of Hoes, Flows, Moneytoes were released as a music cassette for friends internally in the Royal Bunker. Shortly afterwards the album was remastered and the official vinyl and CD edition followed, in which the most marginal lines were censored.
During this time, Savas' imported and translated Battlerap began to establish itself in the Royal Bunker , whereupon a large part of the rappers there switched to this style, including later greats such as Sido , B-Tight , Frauenarzt and King Orgasmus One . For other artists who did not necessarily spend their main time directly in the Royal Bunker or who joined them later, the direction became formative, including Bushido , Prinz Pi , Fler , Bass Sultan Hengzt , Eko Fresh or Kay One .
In 2000 Westberlin Maskulin released their second album Battlekings on vinyl and CD. Shortly after the release, the rap duo announced their split. Since all pages about WBM have been deleted, there is little information about the reasons for the split, which in 2000 already gave rise to much speculation in highly frequented threads in the mzee.com Internet forum . The artists never spoke plainly about their separation, in the environment Taktloss' rejection of increasing success or the mainstream was mentioned again and again . Kool Savas and Taktloss continued to work as solo artists.
style
The lyrics were rich in macabre metaphors, coarse humor, provocation, arrogance and breaking taboos . They contained many elements from American gangsta rap and battle rap . The text content was arrogant, macabre, National Socialist or inhuman ( “The TV is on, I'm happy about deaths in the concentration camp / the rape in the other film is also nice, haha” , tactless on Hoes, Flows, Moneytoes ). However, this is put into perspective on several levels. On the one hand, some of the taboos are intentionally blunt ( "I am a Nazi / Hitler is my father" , Savas on bass ) or insane ( "You are a Jew, I am a racist, nigga" , tactless on Killateam ), on the other hand they were Rappers, including MOR, all from different regions, cultures and backgrounds.
Rap is rich in metaphors and punchlines , simple and rhythmic, in other places distorted, dissonant and raw. Savas' catchy flow is noticeable , the syllables of which usually fit perfectly on the beat, while Taktloss often uses the break of common rhyme schemes, time signatures and flows as a stylistic device.

reception
Prinz Porno paid tribute to the influence of West Berlin Masculine in his song Mein Leben from the album Guess whos back on the Streets :
[...] MK gave me WBM, I was baffled for a week
I say that without Savas and Taktloss
not a single rapper from this city would be big now.
Without masculine there would be no hype about Berlin
WBM was like pure cocaine for my generation [...]
The rappers Fler and Godsilla named their collaboration albums Südberlin Masculin and Südberlin Masculin II in reference to the influential rap duo. Another reference is the name of the rap duo Zugezzug Masculin .
