Through his participation in the formations MOR and Westberlin Masculin , Savas gained first notoriety. His solo albums The Best Day of My Life , Dead or Alive , Aura , Martyrs and KKS as well as the collaboration projects One with Azad , Split personality with Xavier Naidoo and Royal Bunker with Sido were commercially successful. Kool Savas is considered one of the most influential German rappers and one of the most important representatives of battle rap .

Career

Youth and early musical phase

Kool Savas and Melbeatz (2001)

Kool Savas was born in 1975 in Aachen under the real name Savaş Yurderi to a Turkish father and a German mother . When Yurderi was one year old, his parents moved with him to Turkey , his father's country of origin. His father was politically active there, which led to his arrest and ultimately to five years in prison. Yurderi's mother then fled back to Aachen with her son. After the end of the prison sentence, the father also returned to Germany. The family reunited in Berlin 's Kreuzberg district when Yurderi was eleven years old. In the early 1990s, Yurderi began to get involved politically. For example, he took part in demonstrations against neo-Nazis or deportations . He later described this phase as " rather pseudo-political ". At the same time, he started rapping in English . In doing so, he oriented himself primarily towards US rappers who had emerged from the West Coast hip-hop trend , such as Too Short , Compton's Most Wanted , Ice Cube and MC Eiht . Yurderi entered below in hip-hop - workshops in appearance. During these events he met the rapper Fumanschu , with whom he then traveled to Los Angeles .

At the beginning of his activity as a hip-hop musician, Yurderi appeared under the pseudonym Juks. In 1995 he met rapper Ono from the group Walkin 'Large . Together they then formed the hip-hop duo Basic Elements for two years. Yurderi changed his stage name early on, using his real first name Savaş in Kool Savas. Because “Savaş” is the Turkish word for “war”, the stage name can be translated as “ Cold War ”. After his trip to the United States, he decided to write his texts in German in the future . Together with Fumanschu and Justus he recorded the song Masters Of Rap . In 1996, this formed the starting point for the establishment of the hip-hop group Masters of Rap . MOR was supplemented by various rappers in the following years, including Jack Orsen , Big Derill Mack and Taktloss . With the latter, Savas formed the duo Westberlin Masculin in 1997 . In the same year Hoes, Flows, Moneytoes was released as a compact cassette in a limited edition of 50 units . In 1999 the album was re-released on CD and vinyl . 1997 Yurderi appeared as an actor in the television film Geschwister - Kardeşler by the German-Turkish director Thomas Arslan .

In June 1999 the single LMS / Schwule Rapper was the first solo release by Kool Savas on the Put Da Needle To Da Records label . The contact with the music company came about after the director Astrid Milewski had sent a tape Savas' to Chris Maruhn, the editor-in-chief of the hip-hop magazine Juice . This had then forwarded copies to the labels Show-Down , Four Music and Put Da Needle To Da Records . Only Peter Sreckovic from Put Da Needle To Da Records showed interest. Savas became better known in 2000 with the single and the accompanying music video King of Rap , a joint production with the producer Plattenpapzt . In the same year the second album by Westberlin Masculin followed under the title Battlekings . This was the last collaboration between Kool Savas and Taktloss. Since Taktloss also withdrew from the formation MOR, he was no longer represented on the first and at the same time only album by the group NLP - Neuro-Linguistic Programming , which was made with the participation of Kool Savas .

Growing media coverage and commercial breakthrough

Kool Savas (2002)

With Haus & Boot , an EP with the singer Valezka , Savas' first release was released in 2001 and entered the German charts. The accompanying video was also broadcast by the music channel MTV . To further advance his solo career, Savas left the Masters of Rap a short time later, the remaining members of which are still active as a group in various constellations. He also parted ways with his Put Da Needle To Da Records label . The separation was accompanied by disputes. Sreckovic initially did not approve of the rapper's exit from his company. Savas responded with the Free Savas campaign and a play directed against Sreckovic called Fuck Peter . In early 2002, Savas founded his own label Optik Records, which specializes in hip-hop music, as a subcontractor to the music company Sony BMG . In addition to Valezka, he signed the rapper Eko Fresh , whom he had discovered, as well as the producer Melbeatz and DJ Nicon. Together they formed the Optik Crew and published Optik Mixtape Volume 1 . On November 4, 2002, Savas' debut album The Best Day of My Life was released . This reached number 6 in the German album charts and represents the rapper's commercial breakthrough. In addition to the variant of battle rap that is typical for him , Savas also deals with personal topics on his first album, including his belief in vegetarianism .

In August 2003 first Eko Fresh and later also Valezka Optik Records left . The separation of Kool Savas and Eko Fresh resulted in a media dispute that lasted for several months. In particular from the piece Die Abrechnung von Eko Fresh, published at the end of 2004 , in which not only Savas but also Bushido , Fler , MC Rene and Sido are attacked, a number of musical responses resulted from the actors involved. Kool Savas responded in February 2005 with the song The Judgment . In this one, Savas accuses his opponent of greed for money. The video for the piece became a success in the music broadcasters 'program and one of Kool Savas' most popular pieces. For several years the judgment acted as the finale at concerts of the rapper.

In 2004 the compilation The best days are counted and the single OK! von Melbeatz, on which Savas can be heard for the first time alongside the Hamburg Samy Deluxe . Another cooperation followed in 2005 with the rapper Azad in the form of the joint album One . Both hip-hop musicians had a friendship of several years in advance. One rose to number 5 on the German album charts. Furthermore, both rappers appeared in the course of marketing their single All 4 One for the first time in the vicinity of Stefan Raab on TV total . In addition to the album release, Savas formed again with the rappers Caput , Amar, Ercandize and his brother Sinan. The members were introduced via the mixtape The John Bello Story at Optik Records . Kaas and Franky Kubrick and the singer Moe Mitchell , whom Savas had already met in 2003 , were added to the optics crew . Mitchell has since acted as Kool Savas' so-called back-up rapper at concerts for several years . All artists of the music company presented themselves in 2006 on the label sampler Optik Takeover! . In the same year, Savas also appeared as the moderator of the hip-hop battle tournament Feuer über Deutschland .

In the same year, Savas first appeared as a voice actor. For the episode Hell on Earth of the cartoon series South Park , he took over the German voice of The Notorious BIG , which was integrated into the plot on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death. In July 2008, Kool Savas announced the dissolution of his label Optik Records . With the publication of the mixtape John Bello Story II and the subsequent tour of all label artists under the title John Bello 2 - Endlich Frei Tour in January 2009, the company's activities ended. Savas then founded Essah Entertainment as an independent label and booking agency for himself and other artists. The EP What is SAV up to? Was released in 2009 as an exclusive supplement to Juice magazine . . The mixtape John Bello Story III followed a year later , for which he worked for the first time with Melbeatz and a number of different hip-hop producers. In the course of the Kachelmann trial , Kool Savas made insulting comments about Jörg Kachelmann . This then demanded in the form of a lawsuit, the omission of such statements as well as monetary compensation. Yurderi was sentenced by the Berlin regional court to a pain and suffering payment of 10,000 euros for a serious violation of personal rights.

In November 2011, Savas released his third album Aura on his label Essah Entertainment . With this, the rapper reached number 1 in the German and Swiss charts for the first time . Aura also received a gold record through the sale of 100,000 units . In 2012 Savas first completed a tour called Aura Tour . This was followed by a joint concert series with Olli Banjo , Die Orsons and Laas Unltd with “Kool Savas and the League of Extraordinary Mcees” . as well as the comedian Buddy Ogün . Laas Unltd. took over the role of the back-up rapper from Savas, which he has played since then. In the development process of Aura Savas had first time with the R & B - singer Xavier Naidoo worked. Naidoo can be heard on the title track Aura as well as in the final track LMS 2012 . The latter production was placed as a reference to a joint album by the two artists. Savas and Naidoo released this as Duo Xavas in September 2012 under the title Split Personality via Naidoo Records and Essah Entertainment . With the single Schau nicht zurück , the duo took part in the Bundesvision Song Contest 2012 initiated by Stefan Raab , which they won. Don't Look Back also achieved gold status with 150,000 units sold. The album Gespaltene Demokratie was ranked number 1 in Germany and Switzerland . In Germany it also received a platinum record.

Foundation of Essah Media and collaborations with Sido

Kool Savas (2019)

On April 1, 2014, Savas founded the independent label Essah Media . Since then Essah Entertainment has only acted as a booking agency. At the end of August, the label signed a distribution agreement with Sony Music . With Märtyrer , the release of his fourth solo album followed on November 14, 2014. The eight appearances series was titled “Why do you rap? Tour 2 "completed.

In mid-September, he presented with eye the first video of his mixtapes Essahdamus that just appeared a month later and guest contributions from, among others KC Rebell , PA Sports, RA the Rugged Man , Samy Deluxe, Milonair and Gentleman contains. For the song Triumph , Savas collaborated with Azad, Adesse and, for the first time, with Sido. Lass Unltd., Who had accompanied the rapper's performances as a back-up for five years, did not appear next to Savas for the first time on the tour. Since then, the Berlin rapper Takt32 has taken over in his place .

The first collaboration was followed by the song Masafaka on Sido's Das goldene Album at the end of 2016 . The two Berliners also appeared together in the final broadcast of the late-night show Circus HalliGalli alongside Marteria , Jan Delay , Denyo , Clueso and Cro . Social Commitment

Savaş Yurderi comes from a politically active family. According to his father Fazli Yurderi, the assignment of the Turkish word for “war” was related to “national liberation movements” and a global fight against oppression in the 1970s. Since Yurderi's parents see him as part of their own identity, there was a desire to let part of their "way of thinking flow into his name." In his first years as a rapper, however, Yurderi himself deliberately refrained from processing political and religious topics in his texts. to affronts to avoid. On the other hand, outside of hip hop, he was already active as a teenager in protests against neo-Nazis or deportations. With the release of the album The Best Day of My Life , Savas began to incorporate socially critical aspects into his music.

Yurderi has been involved in various projects since 2005. Above all, the rejection of intensive animal husbandry is a central issue that he represents publicly through the support of the animal rights organization PETA . Along with this, he propagates the vegetarian diet, which he has followed since he was 18 years old. Also in 2005, Yurderi was involved in the controversial campaign You are Germany , which addressed a new German national feeling. He also speaks out against cannabis as an intoxicant . To this end, he took part in CanNObis , a drug prevention campaign, and spoke out in interviews in favor of general drug bans .

Yurderi also participated on several occasions in the project My neighborhood, my idea , in which he with young people the issues of bullying and racism treated and creativity promotes. One of these actions resulted in the music video Sky is the Limit . He also supports the Viva con Agua water initiative and the Visions for Children association . In cooperation with Hiphop.de, Savas auctioned various items of clothing in 2014 and donated the money raised to the Sonnenblume eV association in Bremerhaven. At the end of 2015, Savas and Essah Entertainment presented the Rap4Good Festival, where he appeared together with artists such as Genetikk, Curse and KC Rebell for the benefit of the “Urban Culture / DeluxeKidz eV” donation campaign. At the beginning of 2017 he repeated the event with Azad, Samy Deluxe and Das Bo, among others.

style

Concert performance of the rapper

Stylistically, Kool Savas' work can be largely assigned to the hip-hop sub-genre battle rap . Fictitious or real opponents are attacked by chanting in a linguistically as creative form as possible and one's own skills are highlighted in a particularly positive way. This is realized, for example, in events, so-called “battles”, in which two opponents practice a verbal competition on a stage in front of an audience. Savas transferred the principles of verbal discussion both as a solo artist and within the formations MOR and Westberlin Masculin to his studio recordings. Some of these songs were conceived as diss tracks against specific people, such as The Judgment , which is primarily directed against Eko Fresh, but also verbally disparages hip-hop musicians such as Nina MC , Cappuccino or Fettes Brot , or Renexekution , with MC Rene should be attacked. As a rule, however, the lyrics are directed against one or more fictional opponents, such as in the song All in One : “I flow better when I cough, rhyme better without tongue and have twice as much air as you on the microphone without lungs. "Both the exaggeration of oneself as well as the belittling of the opponent are often linguistically connoted sexually, as in the example of the verse" Rap is not pleasure, but hate. Bitches see me on the mic and their panties get wet. My pint as a company by order: I'll fuck you and your crew. Hookers hang on my ass because I'm Kool Savas. ”From the 1997 piece Horror becomes clear. On the content level, Savas has also dealt with personal issues occasionally since the album The Best Day of My Life . The importance of the family, for example, which is partly also directly involved in the recordings, is a recurring theme. Savas himself states that, since the mixtape John Bello Story III, special emphasis has been placed on “themed songs” that stand out from songs that are “all about rapping”.

A significant aspect of Savas' music and its reception is the rapper's flow. This includes the rhythmic design methods as well as the “interlacing of spoken song and accompanying patterns ” within hip-hop music. Despite the importance of flow, it has so far been little studied in terms of music analysis. Kool Savas is characterized by different ways of speaking. For example, the song The Proof (2007) is characterized by a change of tempo in the lecture, whereas Neongelb (2001) is consistently performed as double time. Savas himself describes his voice as a solo instrument, which he trains athletically in order to be able to compare himself on "the level with jazz soloists or [...] guitarists" like Jimi Hendrix . From his point of view, the analysis of the flow resembles a mathematical consideration: “I see rap verses like numbers and dots, like in the matrix. […] Already at NWA I understood: […] They make a short sentence at the beginning, then a pause and then a long sentence. [...] Since then, I've always seen the beat in my mind's eye: boom-chop-boom-boom-chack. And in between the words and syllables in dots and numbers. ”In some cases, complex rhyme structures are the only motivation behind the music. Optimal use of our resources (2011), for example, is about “ simply presenting 30 different rhyme patterns ”over the beat .

The background music for Savas' lecture is provided by hip-hop beats. While he produced his early songs such as LMS or Schwule Rapper himself, the hip-hop producer Melbeatz was responsible for most of his main work, including the full debut album. Both had met in 1994 and had initially been active in the same graffiti crew, the Sleepwalkers. Savas finally explained the production of beats to her using an Akai S900. Since then she has worked as Savas' producer and was also his partner for over ten years. The hip-hop productions are partly based on samples of other pieces of music. In other cases, the original recordings of other songs were not used, but excerpts of these were re-recorded in the studio. In addition to characteristic hip-hop beats, Savas' work also contains isolated songs that can be assigned to G-Funk ( Keep it Gangsta , 2002) or Electro-Rap ( Techno Pilot , 2010). Through the collaboration with Moe Mitchell and Xavier Naidoo, influences from soul and R&B can be found in more recent songs .

Controversy and indexing

Kool Savas (2011)

Savas' texts have often sparked controversy. Especially at the beginning of his activity as a rapper, his texts were received in the media as pornographic, misogynistic and homophobic . For example, the verses “Whore, blow it over, my time is tight. Your mother is waiting outside and wants a penis in her face “from the song You must still practice, highlighted as an example of misogyny in Savas' lyrics. This made him one of the most controversial rappers in Germany. In addition to media representatives and women's associations, members of the hip-hop scene like Hannes Loh also attacked the rapper. The focus of criticism were the pieces LMS and Schwule Rapper , released in 2000, as well as the EP Why do you rap? . In 2002, Hannes Loh described Savas as a “pioneer of a sexist and homophobic language in hip-hop texts.” According to Loh, the development of the “new German battle rap” promoted by Savas replaced the original “respectful opposition” of hip hop with the "Alleged breaking of taboos at any price that allows any form of humiliation through insult".

The play Schwule Rappers was criticized for both homophobia and the textual connection between sex and violence. Because of the scene's recognition of the song, according to the rapper Sookee , "the sexist language and the expression ' gay ' as a pejorative adjective in the [...] youth language was trivialized and established." The criticism of parts of Savas' early work led to the review of the songs by the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People . On March 31, 2001, the EP Why do you rap? indicated, with which it may no longer be sold or advertised to young people under the age of 18. The test center gave the pieces Pimplegioneah , 16/2 and Why do you rap ? on. The single LMS was also indexed on July 31, 2001. In addition to the song LMS , the song Schwule Rapper is also affected. In 2005, Kool Savas distanced himself from his earlier texts. Particularly with regard to misogynistic passages, he does not strive for his listeners to be influenced by them to develop a disrespectful attitude towards women.

2012 hit the hidden track Where are you now? of the album Split personality to a broad reception. In this context, numerous music journalists accused Naidoo and Savas of homophobia. In particular, the equation of child molesters with gays contained in the song was criticized. While a number of prominent hip-hop musicians expressed their support for Xavas, the association Linksjugend Solid filed criminal charges against the two musicians and the responsible music labels. As justification, the youth wing of the party called The Left calling for aggravated assault and homicide and sedition . Savas and Naidoo said in a statement that they neither equate homosexuality and pedophilia , nor do they want to incite violence. The Mannheim public prosecutor saw no request for murder. The incitement to hatred contained in the advertisement was also not recognizable.

meaning

Kool Savas (right) at the Splash! Festival 2017

Kool Savas is considered one of the most influential German rappers. In the 1990s, German hip-hop was only represented in the media in the form of representatives of the German middle class. Both the music industry and the mass media avoided rap, which is thematically about "social misery, everyday racism or economic exploitation". With his form of battle rap, in which his own multicultural background is not explicitly emphasized, Savas was able to celebrate successes equally in “youth centers as with high school students” and thus break through the “rigid boundaries between“ German rap ”and“ migrant rap ”[...] . ”According to Juice editor Chris Maruhn, the stylistic direction of the“ hardcore battle rap ”had already existed in Germany before Savas through pioneers like Moses Pelham and Konkret Finn , but it was only through him that it gained in importance. Kool Savas has "[defined] the parameters on which others later built entire careers." In addition, through songs like LMS , Savas is also seen as a co-founder of the German-language porno rape, which later became the main representatives of Frauenarzt and King Orgasmus One .

Savas' influence is particularly evident in the fact that numerous well-known rappers name him as a role model. In some cases, the early work or the debut album The Best Day of My Life is highlighted as the main influence. The group KIZ and the rappers Grim104 , Prinz Pi and Kurt Hustle emphasized in interviews the importance of the early battle rap recordings. In contrast, Olli Banjo , MoTrip and Ahzumjot especially praised The best day of my life . Furthermore, the hip-hop musician Kaas and the duo Genetikk refer to his influence through quotations from Savas in their own texts. Also the rappers Favorite , Visa Vie , Automatikk , Morlockk Dilemma , Alpa Gun , Laas Unltd. and Fler emphasized the importance of Savas in interviews. He named Fler's joint projects with Silla based on West Berlin masculine Südberlin masculine . The group Zugezzug Masculin also refers to the duo.

Savas' publications could often achieve placements in the best lists of music critics. The music magazine Intro , for example, listed the album Hoes, Flows, Moneytoes at number 8 of the most important German rap albums of the 1990s. For a special issue about rap in Germany, the hip-hop magazine Juice asked a large number of DJs, rappers, producers, hip-hop journalists and label employees about their favorite albums in early 2008. Four of Savas' albums were placed in the top 20. The best day of my life was in 5th place, Battlekings in 14th place, Hoes, Flows, Moneytoes in 15th place and NLP in 18th place.
