biography

Ngcala, a native of South Africa , studied social sciences before starting his full-time career as a musician . His career as a rap musician began in Wuppertal in the 1990s when he and six young friends founded the music group Walkin 'Large Like Bigfoot there in 1994 . They shorten the band's name to Walkin 'Large and released their first single, I Play the Talkbox , in 1994 , which was a success. After that the band was on stage as tour support for the American hip-hop legend A Tribe Called Quest .

In 1995 the second single, the double A-side Reachin '... for My People / When I Flow, followed . The latter was a success with the accompanying album Riverside Pictures , as it was the first collaboration between an American and a German hip-hop act. Walkin 'Large features the famous New York rapper Jeru the Damaja . They then got a contract with WEA and in 1999 released a second album called Self , on which US hip-hop stars like The Roots , J-Live and Brooke Russell were guests. The single Boy Meets World feat. Brixx with the accompanying music video shot in the Wuppertal suspension railway reached the top 50 in the German single charts .

The success of the second album made Ngcala a sought-after feature partner. In 1998 he moved to Cologne and went on tour with various US hip-hop greats such as The Roots, House of Pain , Mobb Deep and Freundeskreis . He was also booked as a guest singer and rapper by P-Funk legend Bootsy Collins and Mellow Bag . He also co-moderated the hip-hop program Word Cup for the music broadcaster VIVA .

In 2001 he worked with the Brothers Keepers , an association of colored musicians (including Xavier Naidoo , Samy Deluxe , Nadja Benaissa , Afrob ) who live in Germany and want to draw attention to racism, discrimination and other abuses. Her single Adriano (Last Warning) , a song in memory of a black family man killed by neo-Nazis , reached number 4 on the singles charts. In 2000 Ngcala moved to Berlin to work behind the scenes as a freelancer at BMG Ufa and the artist agency Enforcemanagement as an artist and band supervisor for Joy Denalane , ASD or Max Herre .

In 2004 Ngcala began to work with producers DJ Rocky and Oja Tunes from Berlin ( Vanessa Petruo and Ferris MC ) as well as the Munich music producer Tai Jason on his first solo album Heavy Rawtation . He wrote texts under four pseudonyms. The record was released on June 6, 2005.

With San Gabriel and Walera he founded the group DATA MC in Berlin in 2004 and has so far released two albums: Data Invasion (2007) and Daily Mirror (2011).

In 2015 the EP The craze won´t fade was released, in May 2019 the solo album Starlight was released .
