history
Archaeological finds show that the area of the municipality, just like the rest of the territory around Lake Mälaren , was settled around 5,000 years ago.
The church itself is still very young. It was formed on January 1st, 1999 by splitting off from the municipality of Södertälje . The area is made up of the old parishes of Turinge and Taxinge . Turinge was an independent municipality until 1970, while Taxinge was part of Mariefred from 1952 to 1970 . Between 1971 and 1998 both areas belonged to the municipality of Södertälje.
Attractions
In addition to various graves from the Stone Age , a rune stone is of particular interest, which is now in the church in Turinge. This stone has a very long inscription and dates from around the year 1100.
A newer attraction is the Taxinge Castle, construction of which began shortly before or in the 14th century under the direction of Bo Jonsson Grip . The current facade of the castle is in the Empire style from 1813. Many famous people have stayed at the castle over the centuries, including Carl Michael Bellman in the 18th century and August Strindberg in the 19th century.
