history

The settlement emerged at the end of the 19th century as a suburb of what was then the municipality of Bromma along the railway line to Västerås . The trigger was the lack of housing in the Stockholm region. The owner of the then Sundbyberg estate, Anders Petter Löfström, initially sold around 40 properties around the new Sundbyberg station. Working families settled there. Gradually, industrial and handicraft businesses were added. Sundbyberg grew rapidly and soon surpassed the main town of Bromma in terms of population. In 1888, Sundbyberg was therefore separated from Bromma and initially formed an independent minority ( köping in Swedish ). In 1927 Sundbyberg received city rights.

In 1949 the places Lilla Alby, Lilla Ursvik and Duvbo were incorporated. Then the new development areas of Storskogen, Ör, Hallonbergen and Rissne were built. In 2006 construction began on the new Stora Ursvik district. Construction work here should be completed by 2016.

In the course of the municipal reform planned for 1971 in Sweden, it was planned to unite the then city of Sundbyberg with the then city of Solna . Therefore, in 1964, these two cities were merged into a so-called "communal bloc" in order to work together on an administrative and political level and thus facilitate unification. However, the merger did not materialize. Instead, the municipality of Sundbyberg was established in 1971.

The Sundbyberger Maraboupark was the winner of the competition "Sweden's most beautiful park 2008".

The Kymlinge district, which was planned in the 1970s and was not built, is located on the territory of the municipality. The underground station of the same name, which was largely built on the underground line that was opened on this section in 1977 , has not yet been put into operation.

traffic

The Sundbyberg railway station is the junction for commuting to Stockholm or from surrounding towns to the industrial companies located here. Both the suburban train lines J43, J43X and J44 (until December 2017 there was only line J35 with 11,300 people boarding daily) and regional trains stop here. Sundbyberg is one of the few stations where suburban and regional trains stop at the same platform. The Sundbybergs centrum station on the Blue Line (T10) is located directly below the train station, with 12,000 passengers boarding every day. The Tvärnana (2700 passengers a day) and some buses stop in front of the station. Other buses stop on the north side of the station (total of 4800 passengers per day).

Other stations of the underground in Sundbyberg are Duvbo (2500 boarding passengers per day), Hallonbergen (7700 boarding passengers per day) and Rissne (6100 boarding passengers per day).

As part of the four-lane expansion of the Mälarbanan Tomteboda – Kallhäll , the Sundbyberg station will be lowered by 2028.
