Landscapes in Schleswig-Holstein

The Schleswig-Holstein Geest is one of the three landscape types of the state , along with the marshland in the west and the eastern hill country, and is also known as the middle ridge of Schleswig-Holstein . It stretches as Hohe Geest from the Danish border in a wide strip via Bredstedt , Hohenwestedt and Itzehoe to the Hamburg area and Lauenburg . Between the marshes of North Friesland and Dithmarschen and the Hohe Geest lies the so-called Vorgeest as a narrow strip , some of which (around Owschlag ) extends into the interior. In the western lowlands there are isolated Geest islands (for example, Stapelholm and Erfde ).

The sandy geest soil is less fertile than the soils of the marshland and the hill country.
