The Kommunhuset in hands

Haninge is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and the historic province of Södermanland . The main town of the municipality is Handen .

geography

Haninge is the southern part of the Stockholm archipelago with islands such as Utö , Ornö, Fjärdlång , Muskö , Kymmendö and Huvudskär as well as the Gålö peninsula, which is a nature reserve. This is also where the Tyresta National Park is located, with hiking trails that are 55 km long. The smaller nature reserve Gullringskärret is located south of the village of Jordbro .

history

South of Jordbro there is a larger burial ground from 2000 years ago. In the eastern part of the burial ground there are several erect stones, ship settlements and stone rings. In the vicinity of the Tornberget elevation , which is the highest mountain in the municipality and the entire province at 111 meters above sea level, remains of settlements that are several thousand years old have been found.

Between 1950 and 1968, the Muskö naval port , an underground naval base, was built under the island of Muskö. In 1971 the municipality was created through the merger of Västerhaninge and Österhaninge.

economy

Various universities are located in Haninge. The Södertörn University of Applied Sciences is here and the Royal Technical University has a branch in the main town of Handen. The latter has been greatly expanded in recent times.
