Nacka is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and in the historical provinces of Södermanland and Uppland .

The center is the city of Nacka , which received city rights in 1949 and is one of the youngest cities in Sweden. Today the community has about 79,000 inhabitants, who are mainly concentrated in the metropolitan areas.

The municipality of Nacka is characterized by a rugged rocky landscape that slopes steeply to the Baltic Sea and its bays. The peaks are often bare or only thinly covered with earth. The rocks are remnants of a mountain range that existed 2,000 million years ago. During the last ice age , the area was pushed below sea level by the ice sheet. It wasn't until around 1000 BC. Chr. Human settlements can be found here for the period 4000 years ago. Above all, grave areas, stone setting and remnants of living spaces are evidence of this. Agriculture and fishing were the main industries until the 17th century. The homesteads were mostly widely scattered. The proximity to Stockholm , with which there was a lively exchange of goods , also had a major influence .

In 1550 Gustaf Wasa had a hammer forge built, whereupon further factories and mills were established in the area, which mainly produced brass, paper and flour. In 1551, a hospital for the mentally disturbed and orphans was established on the Sickla Peninsula and operated until the end of the 18th century. In the 18th century, several industrial companies moved from Stockholm to Nacka because the city was too crowded for them. The industrial revolution allowed these industries to flourish and soon Nacka was an important industrial center. One of the most important operations was the Finnboda Varv shipyard , which existed here from 1878 to 1991.

After the Saltsjöbanan was completed in 1893, many villa areas were built along the route. At the end of the 20th century, however, many companies were shut down, which led to the vacancy or the demolition of many industrial buildings.

The Saltsjöbanan crossed the Danvik Canal , which had not yet been expanded, on a viaduct , which was replaced in 1922 by a bascule bridge , the Danviksbro . In addition to the railway bridge, another bascule bridge was opened for road traffic in 1956. Both bridges are just outside Nacka in the Södermalm area .
