Saltsjöbaden is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and the historic province of Södermanland , on the Baltic coast. The suburb of Stockholm is part of the municipality of Nacka and is directly connected to central Stockholm by the Saltsjöbanan .
Saltsjöbaden (literally The Salt Sea Bath ) was laid out as a resort by Knut Agathon Wallenberg , a member of the wealthy and influential Wallenberg family . In 1891, Wallenberg bought farmland from a newly founded railway company. In 1908 it became an independent municipality, and in 1913 it became a parish church of the Church of Sweden . Legally, it was initially part of Svartlösa , but was incorporated into the municipality of Nacka in 1970 , with which it lost its status as an independent municipality.
The regional railway line ( Saltsjöbanan ), built by Wallenberg and completed in 1893, connects Saltsjöbaden with Stockholm and the terminus Slussen . Two luxury hotels (1893) and a sanatorium, both designed by the architect Erik Josephson , were built. Between 1910 and 1913, the Uppenbarelsekyrkan parish church was built , designed and built by Ferdinand Boberg , with decorations by Olle Hjortzberg , Carl Milles and others. Adjacent land bought by the railroad company was divided into plots. Saltsjöbaden, which was easily accessible from the city via the railway line, quickly became a popular suburb of the upper and upper middle classes , who bought the land and built spacious private houses.
The Stockholm Observatory was located in Saltsjöbaden from 1931 to 2001. The asteroid (36614) Saltis , discovered here in 2000, was named after a nickname of this place.
The larger of the two hotels, the Grand Hotel Saltsjöbaden, was the venue for the historic talks between the Swedish Employers' Association (Svenska Arbetsgivareföreningen , today: the Association of Swedish Entrepreneurs Svenskt näringsliv ) and the Swedish Trade Union Confederation in 1938 , which led to the Saltsjöbaden Agreement . It was also the venue for the secret Bilderberg Conference several times (1962, 1973, 1984).
Saltsjöbaden has also gone down in chess history because it has twice hosted an interzonal tournament : David Bronstein won in 1948 and Alexander Kotow in 1952 .
