Knut Agathon Wallenberg (born May 19, 1853 in Stockholm ; † June 1, 1938 there ) was a Swedish banker and politician . As the son of the banker and politician André Oscar Wallenberg and his wife Catharina Wilhelmina Andersson, Knut belonged to the famous Wallenberg family .

Life

In 1878 Wallenberg married Alice Nickelsen. From 1886 he was chairman of Stockholms Enskilda Bank (today: SEB ), which he made Sweden's most important bank. He was also one of the founders of Stockholm's Business School and Chamber of Commerce. From 1907 to 1919 he was a member of the first chamber of the Swedish parliament . From 1914 to 1917 he was Swedish Foreign Minister and in this capacity he represented a strict policy of neutrality in his country during the First World War .

He founded the town of Saltsjöbaden and its S-Bahn connection to Stockholm .

He was also a Knight of the Royal Order of the Seraphines .

Science Foundation

Together with his wife, Knut Agathon Wallenberg laid the foundation for the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation ( Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse in Swedish ) with 20 million crowns in 1917 . In 2008 the foundation's assets amounted to more than US $ 5 billion. It is the largest private research grant in Sweden.
