André Oscar Wallenberg (born November 19, 1816 in Linköping ; † January 12, 1886 in Stockholm ) was the founder of Stockholms Enskilda Banken in 1856, which merged with Skandinaviska Banken to form Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) in 1972 . Stockholms Enskilda Banken was Sweden's first private commercial bank. Wallenberg was a Swedish naval officer, newspaper editor and from 1853 until his death a member of the Swedish parliament.

Life

He was the son of the Bishop of Linköping and Homer -translator Marcus Wallenberg (* 1774, † 1833) and of Anna Laurentia Barfoth (* 1783 in Lund ). He belongs to the important Swedish Wallenberg family , whose wealth he founded. When he died, his fortune was 5 million kroner .

He attended grammar school in Linköping in Östergötland from 1825 to 1832 and completed his training as an officer in the Swedish Navy in Karlskrona in 1835 . With other naval officers who were dissatisfied with the poor equipment of the navy, he founded a circle of the "Young Fleet". In 1848 the liberal Wallenberg published the first articles on naval policy and currency issues in Sweden's largest newspaper, Aftonbladet, and founded the weekly Bore with other young officers . In 1850 he was to be transferred to Sundsvall , with which they wanted to silence him. He settled in Stockholm that same year and began a career as a businessman. First he founded steam shipping companies.

As a liberal member of the Reichstag , he sat down u. a. for the introduction of the French decimal system for units of measure and weight .

In 1854 he married Catharina Wilhelmina Andersson († 1855); in his second marriage he married Anna Eleonora Charlotta von Sydow in 1861. He is the father of Knut Agathon Wallenberg from his marriage to Catharina Wilhelmina Andersson and of Gustaf Oscar Wallenberg, Axel Wallenberg and Marcus Wallenberg from his second marriage to Anna Eleonora Charlotta von Sydow. He had a total of 21 children

His great-grandson Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat who made a contribution to saving Jews from the Holocaust.
