The Breast orchid ( Ophrys mammosa ) is a kind of the genus of Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) of the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). The species was described in 1807 by the French botanist René Louiche Desfontaines .
features
This herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of between 20 and 60 cm. One or two scale leaves are found at the base of the stem . Three to nine leaves are grouped together in a loose base rosette and one or two more leaves are located above on the stem.
The inflorescence includes two to 18 flowers . The bracts are longer than the ovary . The sepals are usually green. Sometimes the lower half of the middle sepal is tinged with purple. The lateral petals are yellow-green to purple in color.
The flowering period extends from February to May.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.
Location
One finds Ophrys mammosa in sparse coniferous and deciduous forests, maquis , garrigues and neglected grassland dry with moderate to moderately moist, often calcareous soils.
Subspecies
The problem with the subspecies is that they are morphologically fuzzy. To make matters worse, they vary greatly in flower size, hump height, lip curvature and color. There are also early and late blooming variants at the same location, which in turn differ.
Ophrys mammosa subsp. mammosa
This subspecies is found on the Balkan Peninsula , Asia Minor and Crimea . The distribution area extends north to Bulgaria and Albania and east to Anatolia .
Ophrys mammosa subsp. transhyrcana
This subspecies occurs from the Middle East to Anatolia. They have also been found in Iraq and Persia . A synonym is Ophrys transhyrcana Czerniak. This subspecies also has the chromosome number 2n = 36.
