Country Organizations i Sverige ( LO ) is the largest umbrella organization of individual trade unions in Sweden . It has 16 individual trade unions. LO represents the interests of workers in Sweden, while employees are organized in the umbrella organization TCO and academics in the umbrella organization Sveriges Akademikers Centralorganisation (SACO) . Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson has been chairman of the umbrella organization since 2012 .

LO is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). In the membership list of the IGB, membership is given as 1,564,767 (as of November 2017).

history

The country organization was founded in 1898 by 24 trade union federations, 13 trade unions and 19 other organizations with a membership of 50,000. The number of members grew rapidly. In 1945, 45 individual unions with more than 1 million union members were affiliated with the LO. In the decades that followed, the number of individual unions decreased due to mergers and reorganizations, but membership rose steadily, peaking at 2.2 million in the mid-1980s. As of December 31, 2014, LO had 1.47 million members.

Organs of the country organizations i Sverige are:

  • the Congress, the highest decision-making body, which meets every four years
  • the executive committee, consisting of union leaders and eleven elected members
  • the union leadership, consisting of four people (chairman and three deputies)

The head office is in Stockholm . The local work of the national organization takes place in 19 districts and 258 sections.
