history

The first employee unions came into being in the 1930s: in 1931 DACO (De Anställdas Centralorganisation) and in 1937 TCO's predecessor organization. In 1944 the two unions merged to form today's TCO. At the time, the newly formed union federation had 100,000 members, but membership grew rapidly. The expansion of the public sector in the 1960s and 1970s and the growth of the service sector in favor of the industrial sector from the 1980s onwards resulted in an increase in membership. As of January 1, 2005, TCO had 1.275 million members. So about 72% (2019) of all employees and 60% of all workers are unionized.
