Simon Olof Karl Aspelin (born May 11, 1974 in Saltsjöbaden ) is a former Swedish tennis player .
Career
Aspelin began his professional career in 1998. In the same year he achieved his best placement in the ATP world rankings when he was ranked 436 on August 17, 1998.
He achieved major successes only in doubles. After a number of Challenger and Futures successes, he won his first ATP title in 2000 at the side of his compatriot Johan Landsberg in Marseille . In the same year, the doubles also qualified for the Doubles Championships in Bangalore . By the 2007 season , the right-hander had five more double victories with Massimo Bertolini and Todd Perry , including at the International Series Gold tournament in Memphis alongside Perry.
The year 2007 was his most successful when he was able to win four tournaments together with the Austrian Julian Knowle . He achieved the greatest triumph of his career, again at the side of Knowle, with the 2007 victory in the doubles competition at the US Open . The couple seeded only as number 10 defeated the Czechs Lukáš Dlouhý and Pavel Vízner 7: 5 and 6: 4 in the final . That same season , he again reached the year-end Double Championships and won $ 432,685 in prize money, which was a personal record. On November 5, 2007 Aspelin climbed to 8th place in the double world rankings; He achieved his best placement in March 2008 with rank 7.
Together with Thomas Johansson , he won the silver medal in doubles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing ; they were subject to the Swiss Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka in the final .
In the 2009 season he achieved another triumph with Paul Hanley by winning the German Open in Hamburg . He also reached the final in Casablanca with Hanley and the final of the Masters tournament in Madrid with Wesley Moodie . He won his last title in 2010 at the ATP tournament in Dubai , also with Hanley. On July 17, 2011, after losing the final at the tournament in Båstad , Aspelin announced his retirement from professional tennis. He won a total of twelve ATP tournaments, including the US Open . In addition, he was in the final of another 21 tournaments.
From 2001 to 2011 Aspelin took part for Sweden in the Davis Cup ; his partner was Jonas Björkman until 2007 . Of the seven matches (including against Russia, France, India and Argentina), the couple could only win two. From February 2008 Aspelin played alongside Robert Lindstedt , with whom he won four of the five joint games. Aspelin also completed two individual encounters, both of which he lost.
