Oliver Marach (born July 16, 1980 in Graz ) is an Austrian tennis player . He is particularly successful in doubles and won the Australian Open in 2018 with partner Mate Pavić . Along with Thomas Muster , Julian Knowle , Jürgen Melzer and Alexander Peya, he is one of only five Austrians to have won a Grand Slam tournament.
Career
In his career to date, the right-hander has won 23 doubles titles on the ATP World Tour and reached 28 other finals in doubles competitions. He achieved his highest single placement in the world rankings with 82nd place in August 2007.
In 2007 Marach won his first double title in Bucharest . The 2008 season played Marach in doubles with the Slovak Michal Mertiňák and the Poland Łukasz Kubot . On the side of Mertiňáks he won the Acapulco tournament on the World Tour and reached the final of the Challenger of Barletta . With his Polish partner he won four Challenger tournaments and reached three other finals. In 2009 he reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open alongside Kubot . They defeated the top seeded duo Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić in the second round . In the clay court season, he was able to improve further in the world rankings by winning the tournament in Casablanca and the Serbia Open . In November, he also won the first hard court tournament of his career in Vienna alongside Kubot and was thus able to take his highest world ranking position to date with rank 12. With Kubot he qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals of the eight best teams in London at the end of the year . The first two encounters against Lukáš Dlouhý and Leander Paes as well as Max Mirny and Andy Ram they won, but lost the third encounter against Bob and Mike Bryan and were thus just eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2010 Marach won two titles again alongside Kubot. He also secured a third title of the season with Santiago Ventura . At the French Open he reached the quarter-finals and in the mixed competition the semi-finals, which he just lost. At Wimbledon , he and his partner failed in the first round. At the US Open he reached the quarter-finals for the first time despite a shoulder infection.
In 2011 Marach also won three double titles on the World Tour. With Leonardo Mayer , he first secured the tournament victory in Buenos Aires in February before winning with Alexander Peya in Hamburg in July . The third title win followed in Bangkok in October with Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi . Marach and his partners won all finals in straight sets. In Viña del Mar , Marach suffered a final defeat at the side of Łukasz Kubot against Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in February as well as three months later with Alexander Peya in Belgrade against František Čermák and Filip Polášek . In the following season , Marach managed to win the only title of the season with Peya right at the start of the season in Auckland , this time defeating Čermák and Polášek in the final. In the only other final participation in May in Nice, Marach, this time with Filip Polášek as a partner, lost to the brothers Bob and Mike Bryan in two sets. In 2013 Marach remained without a title on the World Tour, in both finals he reached, he was defeated in the match tie-break. With Lukáš Dlouhý he lost in Bucharest against Max Mirny and Horia Tecău , in Basel he lost with Julian Knowle against Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot . On the other hand, he achieved four tournament victories on the Challenger Tour . He won the doubles competitions in Bordeaux (with Christopher Kas ), Genoa (with Daniele Bracciali ), Rennes and Geneva (both with Florin Mergea ). As in 2012, Marach moved into two ATP finals in the 2014 season . With Mergea he won the title at the tournament in Viña del Mar for the second time , after beating Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah 6: 3 and 6: 4 in the final . In Båstad he lost with Jérémy Chardy the final game against Nicholas Monroe and Johan Brunström . In 2015 Marach was unsuccessful in his finals. He lost with Pablo Andújar in the final in Rio de Janeiro as well as in the final in Buenos Aires . In Gstaad he was defeated in the final at the side of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.
In the 2016 season , Marach played most of the season with Fabrice Martin as a partner. In January and February, the two immediately won tournaments in Chennai , where they defeated Austin Krajicek and Benoît Paire in the final, and in Delray Beach , where they beat Bob and Mike Bryan in a match tie-break. In the further course of the season they also reached the finals in Stuttgart , Shenzhen and Vienna without winning another title. With Philipp Oswald he won the Challenger tournament in Aix-en-Provence and reached the semi-finals of the mixed competition with Jeļena Ostapenko in Wimbledon . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Marach started doubles with Alexander Peya and was eliminated with this in the quarter-finals against the eventual Olympic champions Rafael Nadal and Marc López . In 2017 , Marach, who only started the season in March due to an injury, reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in Wimbledon with his new doubles partner Mate Pavić , who was 13 years younger than Łukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo in five sets with 7: 5, 5: 7, 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 3, 11:13 lost. With Pavić he had already reached the final at the preparatory tournaments in Stuttgart and Antalya , but also lost them. In July he won the tournament in Gstaad , where he started with Philipp Oswald. They defeated Jonathan Eysseric and Franko Škugor 10: 8 in the match tie-break. At the US Open he reached the semi-finals of the mixed competition with Anastasia Rodionova . With Mate Pavić, Marach finally won their first joint title win in Stockholm in October when they defeated Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in three sets. At the ATP Finals , the two were on site as a substitute pairing and were still used in the group stage in the last round of the game. Although they won their game against Bob and Mike Bryan, they had no chance of reaching the semi-finals and were eliminated.
Marach and Pavić continued their partnership in the 2018 season and made the start of the season extremely successful. At their first tournament of the season in Doha , they immediately secured the title with a final victory against top seeded Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares , to whom they were defeated in the Stuttgart final last year. A week later they also won the tournament in Auckland after beating Max Mirny and Philipp Oswald in the final . At the following Australian Open in Melbourne , they started in seventh place in the tournament and, after winning five games, played their way to the final, in which they met Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah. They won the match 6: 4 and 6: 4 and thus secured their first Grand Slam title. The final defeat in Rotterdam in mid-February against Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut was Marach and Pavić's first loss of the season after they had previously won 17 games in a row. Two months later they reached their first Masters final in Monte-Carlo , but were left behind against Bob and Mike Bryan. In May, the two won their fifth joint title and the fourth of the current season in Geneva . They defeated their opponents Ivan Dodig and Rajeev Ram with 11: 9 in the match tie-break of the final . On May 28, 2018, Marach achieved his best career ranking in the world rankings in doubles with second place, behind his doubles partner Pavić. At the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, the French Open , they reached the final like at the Australian Open, but this time they were unsuccessful. In two sentences they were defeated by Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. While they were eliminated in the second round at Wimbledon and the US Open , further finals followed at the ATP tournaments in Hamburg and Beijing . As the best doubles of the season, Marach and Pavić qualified for the ATP Finals , but were eliminated in the group stage despite an opening win. Nevertheless, they ended the year in the double world rankings as the best pairing.
In 2019, Marach and Pavić only achieved the first tournament win of the season when they successfully defended their title in Geneva . In two sets they defeated Matthew Ebden and Robert Lindstedt in the final . Shortly afterwards, they announced during the French Open that they would end their partnership after the tournament. They reached the round of 16 at the tournament, where they were eliminated from the eventual winners Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies . Pavić had decided to continue playing with Bruno Soares, whose partnership with Jamie Murray had also ended shortly before. Marach then played the rest of the season with Jürgen Melzer , with whom he won the tournament in Hamburg in July . The two-set success against Robin Haase and Wesley Koolhof in the final marked Marach's 23rd title win on the ATP Tour. Just a week earlier, Marach and Melzer had reached the final in Umag and lost it to Robin Haase and Philipp Oswald. They achieved another success with the quarter-finals at the US Open , before they ended their partnership again in Vienna after the fourth first-round defeat in a row due to lack of success. Marach's new partner was Raven Klaasen , who separated from his partner Michael Venus at the end of the season .
In the 2020 season , which was interrupted from March due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Marach and Klaasen made it to the finals at the tournament in Dubai at the end of February . In the final they were defeated by John Peers and Michael Venus 3: 6 and 2: 6.
