Łukasz Kubot (born May 16, 1982 in Bolesławiec , Dolnośląskie ) is a Polish tennis player .
Career
Kubot became a professional tennis player in 2002. Already this season he achieved his first successes in doubles in future and challenger tournaments . He also got into the main draw of the ATP tournament in Sopot via a wildcard , where he failed in the first round. In 2004 he again received a wildcard for Sopot, both for the single and for the double competition. In the singles he was able to defeat the four seeded Russian Igor Andrejew in the first round. In addition, he was able to qualify for the first time for a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon on the side of the Hungarian Gergely Kisgyörgy . He also scored there by reaching the second round, in which he failed to Bob and Mike Bryan , a respectable success. From the 2006 season Kubot took part regularly in singles and doubles in ATP tournaments, in which he mostly failed in the first rounds. At the US Open he reached the third round in singles.
In 2007 , Kubot specialized more and more in doubles, which was reflected in all four Grand Slam tournaments this year. There he was particularly successful at the French Open and the Australian Open and reached the second round in both tournaments. He also made it into the finals of an ATP tournament for the first time in April alongside the Austrian Oliver Marach in Casablanca . There they lost to Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley just in the match tie-break . With Lovro Zovko he also made it to the finals at the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon , which he could not win either. In the course of the season he reached 42nd place, his best ever ranking in the double world rankings. The 2008 season turned out to be less successful. Kubot mainly had to contest Challenger tournaments again and only reached the main rounds of the French Open with Zovko and Wimbledon with the South African Rik De Voest , where he failed in the second and first round. As a result, he fell back to 92nd place in the world rankings in August.
In the 2009 season , Kubot teamed up again with Marach and was able to celebrate the greatest successes of his career with the Austrian. At the beginning of the season they made it to the finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco and reached the semifinals of the Australian Open . On the way there they eliminated the top seeded pairing Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić, among others . They also won the tournament in Casablanca , Kubot's first tournament success on the ATP Tour and the Serbia Open in Belgrade . There he also made it into the final in the individual competition, after benefiting from Steve Darcis' shoulder injury as a lucky loser and thus making it into the main draw. He was the first Pole in a single tournament final of the ATP since Wojciech Fibak 1983, but he was defeated by Novak zweioković in two sets. In November he had his first success at a hard court tournament, at the BA TennisTrophy in Vienna. After these successes, Kubot reached eleventh place on November 2nd, his highest world ranking position in doubles.
In 2010 , at the Australian Open , he made it into the round of 16 in an individual competition at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career. In February he reached the finals in both doubles and singles at the Brasil Open in São Paulo. With Oliver Marach he won the double titles in Santiago de Chile and Acapulco in the same month , with which he also won his first title in the World Tour 500 category in the latter. In September, Juan Ignacio Chela won the doubles competition in Bucharest . On June 7, 2010, he was in the top ten in the world rankings for the first time and improved to seventh in September. In the following season he made it into the third round of the French Open in singles, and in Wimbledon he reached the round of 16. In doubles he remained without a title during the season, but was in the final again with Oliver Marach in Santiago de Chile . In 2012 Kubot made it into the third round of the French Open again, but there were no further successes in the individual. This is opposed to three finals in doubles: with Jérémy Chardy , he initially lost the final in Bucharest in April , but secured the title in Stuttgart three months later . With Janko Tipsarević he moved into a Masters final in Rome for the first time, the two lost this against Marcel Granollers and Marc López in two sets. The 2013 season was partly successful. He won the doubles tournament in Acapulco with David Marrero and moved into the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon for the first time in his career, in which he was defeated by his compatriot Jerzy Janowicz in three sets. For this success he received the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland .
At the side of Robert Lindstedt , he achieved his first Grand Slam success in 2014 at the start of the season by winning the title at the Australian Open . In the final they defeated Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen 6: 3 and 6: 3. Kubot had originally planned to take part in the tournament with Jürgen Melzer , but he was injured in advance and canceled. By winning the title, Kubot moved up from 41st to 14th place in the world rankings and finished the season at 18th place. He did not make any further finals during the season, in individual he fell out of the top 100 in the world rankings to 170th In 2015 , Kubot focused on the double game. He achieved a total of four tournament victories with different partners, the first of which in 's-Hertogenbosch with Ivo Karlović . With Jérémy Chardy he won the tournament in Båstad , with Édouard Roger-Vasselin the tournament in Metz and with Marcelo Melo the tournament in Vienna . In the Davis Cup , Kubot reached the play-offs for promotion to the world group with the Polish team , in which Poland won 3-2 against Slovakia . Kubot won the double game on the side of Marcin Matkowski . In the following season , Kubot and Melo defended their title in Vienna . With Marcin Matkowski Kubot had previously reached the final of Estoril and the last sixteen at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In mixed he was eliminated with Agnieszka Radwańska in the first round. At the French Open , Kubot reached the semi-finals with Alexander Peya and reached the finals of the double tournaments in Halle and Washington, DC. In the Davis Cup , Poland was relegated again after a relegation defeat against Germany .
2017 was Kubot's most successful season: together with Marcelo Melo, who played the entire season with Kubot, he reached his first season finale in Indian Wells in March , in which Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram narrowly prevailed with 10: 8 in the match tie-break . Just two weeks later, he finally won his first Masters title in Miami and immediately followed up with the second in Madrid in May . Kubot and Melo won the title in Madrid without losing a set. In June, the duo secured tournament victories in 's-Hertogenbosch and Halle within two weeks . At the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon , they won their fifth joint title of the current season. After they had already prevailed in the semifinals against Henri Kontinen and John Peers in the extension of the fifth set with 9: 7, they also defeated Oliver Marach and Mate Pavić in the final with 13:11 in the extension of the decisive fifth round. In the world rankings, Kubot moved up to a new career high, fourth place. Against peers and continents, Kubot and Melo lost in the final in Washington, DC in August as well as in the Masters final in Shanghai in October . In Paris, however, they managed to win their sixth title of the season, whereupon Kubot took second place in the world rankings. Due to their numerous successes, they qualified as the best team for the ATP Finals , in which they also reached the final. In this they had to admit defeat to Henri Kontinen and John Peers again, but ended the year with a game balance of 49:17 as the best double in the world rankings.
Due to the tournament victory in Sydney with Marcelo Melo at the start of the 2018 season , Kubot, tied on points with Melo, also took the lead in the individual double world rankings. As the season progressed, Kubot and Melo won the tournaments in Halle , Beijing and Shanghai . In September, Kubot and Melo were in the final at the US Open for the first time , losing 3: 6 and 1: 6 to Mike Bryan and Jack Sock . At the ATP Finals they were eliminated in the group stage. On May 21, 2018, Kubot again lost the lead in the world rankings and ended the year in ninth place. During the 2019 season , Kubot remained consistently in the top ten and has now returned to second place. He and Marcelo Melo achieved their only tournament victory in August in Winston-Salem , after losing out at the finals in Indian Wells in March and in Halle in June . In October she also reached the finals in Shanghai and Vienna , but lost both. In the season finale in London they were eliminated in the semifinals.
In February 2020, Kubot won the Acapulco title with Melo , Kubot's third title win at the tournament.
