The Madrid Masters is a men's tennis tournament in Madrid and since 2011 the fourth tournament of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in the calendar year. The previous venues since the Masters Series was founded in 1990 have been Stockholm (1990–1994), Essen (1995) and Stuttgart (1996–2001). Like the tournament in Madrid 2002-2008, these were held indoors on hard court or carpet and were each the eighth Masters tournament of the season. This position has been held by the Shanghai tournament since 2009 .
The Mutua Madrilena Masters has been held on clay in the Caja Mágica sports complex since 2009 , replacing the Masters in Hamburg . It has a main field with 56 players in singles and from 2019 32 pairings in doubles. The games are played over two sets of wins (best of three) . Until 2006, best of five (three sets of wins) were played in the final .
The Madrid Masters caused a stir with a discussion about the color of the sand. Tournament owner Ion Țiriac suggested that the tournament - based on the color of the logo of the main sponsor Mutua Madrileña - be held on blue sand. He also emphasized that the color makes it easier to watch because the ball is easier to see than red clay courts. This proposal initially met with little approval, well-known players such as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer spoke out against the new rubber. Nonetheless, the 2012 event took place on blue sand. Both Nadal and Novak Đoković criticized the flooring and the tournament organization so much after their departure that they threatened a boycott for the coming year if the blue sand should be kept. In the following year, the conventional sand was used again.
The record winner in singles is Rafael Nadal with five wins , twins Bob and Mike Bryan and Daniel Nestor have triumphed five times in doubles . All four players won the tournament on both hard court and clay.
