Dominic Thiem (born September 3, 1993 in Wiener Neustadt ) is an Austrian tennis player .

After Thomas Muster and Jürgen Melzer , Thiem is the third Austrian to have made it into the top ten in the world rankings . His greatest success to date is winning the US Open 2020 in singles. He is the first Austrian to win this tournament and, after Muster's French Open victory in 1995, the second Austrian Grand Slam winner .

Career

Adolescent years

Thiem comes from Lichtenwörth and started playing tennis at the age of six. In 2011 he made it to the finals in the junior competition of the French Open . In the final he was defeated by the American Björn Fratangelo . After this success he received a wild card for the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel , where he was defeated by the Spaniard Daniel Gimeno Traver in the first round . In September 2011 he received another wildcard for the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok. He lost to Jarkko Nieminen in three sets in the opening round . He received his third wildcard in the same season at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. There he achieved his first victory on the ATP World Tour in the game against Thomas Muster . In the second round he was defeated by the Belgian Steve Darcis 2: 6 and 2: 6. At the end of the year he won three junior tournaments in a row, including the Orange Bowl .

2012 to 2013: First years in professional tennis

In his first year as a professional, Thiem won several ITF Future tournaments in the Czech Republic and Morocco. As in the previous year, he received a wildcard for the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel . There he lost to Martin Kližan with 1: 6, 6: 3 and 5: 7. In Vienna he received another wildcard. In the first round he defeated Lukáš Lacko before losing to Marinko Matosevic .

The year 2013 did not start as desired for Thiem. Problems with the wisdom teeth forced him to take an unwanted break and so he also missed the Davis Cup match between Austria and Kazakhstan. Thiem did not return until mid-March and promptly reached the final of a future tournament in Croatia, where he won his first future tournament the following week. After failed attempts to qualify for the ATP tournaments in Casablanca and Bucharest , Thiem was again incapacitated by an intestinal inflammation in early June. In mid-July he celebrated his comeback at a future tournament in Italy, where he made it to the final. The wildcard at the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel brought him to the quarter-finals after victories over Kuznetsov and Jürgen Melzer , where he finally lost to Albert Montañés . His ITF tournament victory in Este and the final at the Challenger tournament in Como finally brought Thiem into the top 200 tennis players in the world for the first time in early September. On September 21, he won his first title at an ATP Challenger tournament in Kenitra, Morocco . In Vienna , where he was again given a wildcard, he reached the quarter-finals.

2014 to 2015: Establishment and breakthrough on the ATP Tour

Right at the beginning of the year, Thiem reached the second round of the Australian Open as a qualifier. In February he made his first place in the top 100 of the tennis world rankings . At his first ATP Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , he made it into the third and second round. Thus Thiem came to his first appearance in the Davis Cup against Slovakia, in which he lost both his singles and doubles. At the ATP clay court tournament in Madrid he reached the third round as a qualifier, defeating, among other things, Stan Wawrinka , who was placed in third position . At the tournament in Kitzbühel he reached his first World Tour final by beating last year's two finalists Marcel Granollers and Juan Mónaco , but lost it in three sets against David Goffin . At the US Open , Thiem reached the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time after victories over Lukáš Lacko and the seeded Ernests Gulbis and Feliciano López .

After many setbacks at the beginning of 2015 and also through injuries, he lost some positions in the ATP world rankings. On May 23, 2015 he achieved his first triumph on an international level. At the tournament in Nice he won his first title on the ATP World Tour against Leonardo Mayer and thus achieved his best place in the world rankings with rank 31. After a break of over a year, Thiem returned to the Davis Cup . In the duel with the Netherlands in Kitzbühel he lost to both Thiemo de Bakker and the two-time Kitzbühel winner Robin Haase . On July 26, 2015, he achieved his second success on the World Tour. He won the final in Umag against João Sousa and was among the top 25 in the world rankings for the first time. On August 2, 2015, he won his third title in Gstaad after defeating David Goffin 7: 5 and 6: 2 in the final.

2016: First ATP 500 title

With a victory in the semifinals against the top seeded Rafael Nadal , Thiem made it into the final against Nicolás Almagro in Buenos Aires , whom he narrowly defeated 7: 6 (7: 2), 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 4). This placed him in the top 15 of the world rankings for the first time. Shortly afterwards he won his first title in the ATP World Tour 500 category in Acapulco after a three-set final victory over Bernard Tomic . Three weeks after losing to Philipp Kohlschreiber in the final in Munich , he was able to defend a title for the first time in Nice against Alexander Zverev . At the French Open he celebrated his greatest success so far by fighting his way to the semi-finals, where he had to admit defeat to world number one and eventual winner Novak Đoković in three sets. With this, Thiem made it into the top ten of the world rankings for the first time in seventh place. At the following tournament in Stuttgart he was able to continue his run. In the semifinals, he defeated “lawn king” Roger Federer in three sets. After the match, Thiem described the victory as "the happiest moment of his tennis year so far". In the final he celebrated a three-set win against Philipp Kohlschreiber and was the first Austrian ever to win a title on grass. At Wimbledon he lost in the second round against Jiří Veselý in three sets, all sets were lost in the tie- break and Thiem described this fact as "a defeat on penalties". In September he reached his sixth season finale in Metz , but lost to Lucas Pouille there . At the end of the season he qualified for the first time for the ATP World Tour Finals , but retired after a win against Gaël Monfils and two defeats against Novak Đoković and Milos Raonic in the group stage.

2017: Another ATP 500 title and several finals

In 2017 he reached the first sixteen at the Australian Open , which he lost in four sets to David Goffin . The clay court season started extremely successfully for Thiem: In February he won his eighth career title in Rio de Janeiro with a two-set win against Pablo Carreño Busta. At the end of April he was in the final in Barcelona and in the final and semifinals of the subsequent Masters in Madrid and Rome . In the finals in Barcelona and Madrid he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in two sets. In Rome he inflicted his only defeat on clay this year with 6: 4, 6: 3 in the quarter-finals, but then lost significantly to Novak Đoković in the semifinals with 1: 6, 0: 6. On May 15, 2017, Thiem equalized his previous career high in the world rankings with seventh place. At the French Open , after beating Đoković in the quarter-finals, he reached a Grand Slam semi-finals for the second time in a row. In the semifinals he failed again at the eventual tournament winner Rafael Nadal. In Wimbledon, he reached the round of 16 for the first time, which he lost in five sets against Tomáš Berdych . At the US Open he made it to the second round for the third time after 2014 and 2016, which he also lost in five sets against Juan Martín del Potro . So he was one of the best eight players in all four Grand Slam tournaments this year and, as in the previous year, qualified for the ATP Finals at the end of the year. With a win against Pablo Carreño Busta and two defeats against the eventual winner Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin, however, he did not get beyond the preliminary round again.

2018: French Open final

At the Australian Open at the beginning of the year, Thiem moved into the round of 16, as in the previous year, where he was defeated by Tennys Sandgren in five sets . As in the previous two years, he was then able to win his first title of the season in February in Buenos Aires, the second title there after 2016. He remained without a set loss throughout the tournament and won the final 6: 2, 6: 4 against Aljaž Bedene. This was followed by a few quarterfinal defeats at the ATP 500 tournaments in Rio de Janeiro, Acapulco and Barcelona as well as a significant defeat in the quarterfinals against Rafael Nadal with 0: 6, 2: 6 in April at the Masters in Monte Carlo. Things went better for Thiem in May at the Masters in Madrid, where he won the quarter-finals against last year's winner Nadal 7: 5, 6: 3 and only had to admit defeat to Alexander Zverev 4: 6, 4: 6 in the final. In the Masters of Rome a week later, however, he was eliminated in his first game against Fabio Fognini.

On May 26, 2018, Thiem managed to win his tenth title at the Lyon tennis tournament in preparation for the French Open . After a set and break deficit, he defeated Gilles Simon 3: 6, 7: 6, 6: 1. At the French Open , he reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, including a three-set win against Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. In the final, however, he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in three sets 4: 6, 3: 6, 2: 6. In the world rankings, he moved back to seventh place after reaching the finals. At the US Open , he reached the quarter-finals for the first time, which he lost to Rafael Nadal in five sets with 6: 0, 4: 6, 5: 7, 7: 6, 6: 7 after 4 hours and 49 minutes. In September he won the Saint Petersburg tournament with a two-set win over Martin Kližan . At the ATP Finals he was eliminated from the group stage for the third time in a row after a win against Kei Nishikori and two defeats against Kevin Anderson and Roger Federer and finished the season in eighth place.

2019: First Masters title and double triumph at home

The 2019 season started rather moderately for Thiem. At the Australian Open , he had to give up in the second round against Alexei Popyrin in the third set. At the tournament in Buenos Aires he made it to the semi-finals, but lost there against Diego Schwartzman after winning the first set. At the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro , he failed in the first round, he lost in two sets against the eventual tournament winner Laslo Đere . However, the Masters in Indian Wells was much more successful after that , where he defeated Roger Federer in the final 3: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5 and thus won his first Masters title. Two less successful Masters in Miami and Monte Carlo followed with victory at the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona, the second title of the season. Thiem didn't give a set in any of his five games played; in the semifinals he defeated Nadal, in the final he prevailed against Daniil Medvedev .

A few weeks after Indian Wells' Masters title, Thiem announced the separation from long-term coach Günter Bresnik . His place was taken by Nicolás Massú , two-time Olympic champion from Athens in 2004 , who had previously been hired as a touring coach. Herwig Straka became the new manager .

At the Masters in Madrid in early May, he won again against Roger Federer, this time in the quarterfinals in three sets with 3: 6, 7: 6 (13:11), 6: 4. In the semifinals he was then defeated by the eventual tournament winner Novak Đoković in two sets in the tie-breaker. With his partner Diego Schwartzman he was also in the finals of the doubles competition - just like three months earlier in Buenos Aires. At the Masters in Rome a week later, however, he was eliminated after his first game against Fernando Verdasco . At the French Open 2019 , Thiem reached the final in a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in his career - after beating Novak Đoković in the semi-final in a game that was interrupted several times over two days with 6: 2, 3: 6, 7: 5, 5: 7, 7: 5. In the final he lost again to Rafael Nadal, this time in four sets (3: 6, 7: 5, 1: 6, 1: 6). However, the remaining Grand Slam tournaments were not very successful, with Thiem already failing in the first round in both Wimbledon and New York.

On August 3, 2019, he defeated the Spaniard Albert Ramos in two sets at the ATP 250 tournament in Kitzbühel and was able to win an ATP tournament in his home country for the first time. On October 27, 2019, he also won the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, this time in three sets against Diego Schwartzman . He was the first player in his country to achieve tournament victories in both Austrian tournaments and is also the first player to win both tournaments in the same year. At the ATP finals in London in 2019 he reached the semi-finals for the first time after victories over Novak Đoković and Roger Federer, which he won in two sets against last year's winner Alexander Zverev. In the final in London he then had to admit defeat in three sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas , against whom he had won the final of the Beijing tournament in three sets a month earlier .

For the first time in his career, Thiem was able to win five tournaments within one season and ended the season in fifth place in the world rankings.

2020: Australian Open final and US Open victory

In January 2020 as part of the Australian Open , the collaboration with Thomas Muster , which had only started in the same year, was declared to have ended again. Regardless, Thiem reached the final of the tournament for the first time , where he was defeated by Novak Đoković in five sets. Previously, Thiem u. a. Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev defeated in four sets each. In the world rankings, he moved up to fourth place.

At the beginning of March, Thiem rose to his best career ranking and replaced Roger Federer as number three in the world rankings. Since no tournaments have been held since March due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the world rankings were frozen, Thiem retained this position until August 2020. The ATP had for this reason the tournament schedule for the season 2020 completely upset, so was just before the US Open , the New York Masters Cincinnati place where Thiem after a bye in the first round but already in the second round Filip Krajinović quite clear 2: 6 and 1: 6 lost. After the failed dress rehearsal, he played his way to the final at the following US Open and defeated Marin Čilić , Alex de Minaur and last year's finalist Daniil Medvedev on the way . Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had to cancel the tournament due to injury or due to the pandemic and so Thiem was placed as number two for the tournament. In the final, Dominik Thiem met Alexander Zverev and won his first Grand Slam title in five sets after falling 2-0 .

Davis Cup

Thiem has been playing for the Austrian Davis Cup team since 2014 and has a score of 10: 6 (of which 9: 4 in singles and 1: 2 in doubles).

Private

Dominic Thiem was in a relationship with the French tennis player Kristina Mladenovic from the beginning of 2017 to the end of 2019 .

His younger brother Moritz (* 1999) is also a professional tennis player.

In the course of the discussion about financial support for badly placed tennis players due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic , Thiem took a negative stance and stated: “I would not see why I should give money to such people. I prefer to donate to people or institutions that really need it. ”He went on to explain:“ None of us top people received this as a present. We all had to fight our way up. In no job do I have the guarantee that one day I will earn a lot of money with it. No tennis player, not even those below, is fighting for survival. Nobody has to starve to death. "
