Stefanos Tsitsipas ( Greek Στέφανος Τσιτσιπάς ; born August 12, 1998 in Athens ) is a Greek tennis player . In 2019 he won the unofficial tennis world championship with the ATP Finals , which is his greatest success to date.

Personal

Stefanos Tsitsipas started playing tennis in Athens when he was three. His father Apostolos is a tennis coach, his mother a former Russian WTA player (WTA 194). He has two brothers and a sister - Petros , Elisavet and Pavlos, all of whom train at Patrick Mouratoglou 's tennis academy in Nice . The grandfather, Sergei Salnikov , was a Soviet footballer.

Besides Greek, Tsitsipas also speaks English and Russian. He is looked after by his father Apostolos on the tour, otherwise he trains at Patrick Mouratoglou's tennis academy. Its manager is Patricio Apey .

Career

Junior Tour (until 2013)

From 2013 the Greek played on the ITF Junior Tour, where he was able to win small tournaments in the first year. In 2014 and 2015 he was in the final of the Orange Bowl , one of the most prestigious youth tournaments. Here he lost to Stefan Kozlov and Miomir Kecmanović . In 2015 he took part in all four Grand Slam tournaments and always survived at least the first round, the Australian Open only ended in the quarter-finals. The following year he repeated this success and reached the same round at the French Open . At Wimbledon and at the US Open , it was not over until the semifinals against Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Félix Auger-Aliassime . In doubles, at the same place in New Wimbledon alongside Kenneth Raisma, he won the doubles title again against the Canadians, after reaching the semi-finals at the US Open in 2015. The constant performance helped Tsitsipas to rise to the top of the tennis world rankings in May 2016. The double victory at Wimbledon was only the second major title of a Greek across all genders after Nicky Kalogeropoulos , who won two junior grand slam tournaments in 1963.

Early years (2014-2016)

Since 2013 Tsitsipas has also participated in professional tournaments - more precisely the lowest endowed ITF Future Tour - but only managed to reach a final there at the end of 2015, which he lost to Steven Diez . A month later he won a tournament in the same category in singles and in the calendar year also three futures in doubles, so that he ended the year in the top 600. In 2016, Tsitsipas achieved four more future singles titles, which meanwhile he won 14 matches in a row and entered the top 350 in the world rankings. He then played increasingly on the higher endowed ATP Challenger Tour , where he was able to reach the finals in two tournaments in a row in Mohammedia and Casablanca . In the finals he drew the short straw against Gerald Melzer (6: 3, 3: 6, 2: 6) and Maxime Janvier (4: 6, 0: 6), but it meant another jump in the world rankings of 150 places up to the top 200. The Greek finished the year on rank 209 in singles and 364 in doubles.

Promotion to the extended world elite and victory at the ATP Finals (2017-2019)

Tsitsipas 2017 at Wimbledon

In 2017, Tsitsipas took part in the qualification for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. At the Australian Open he lost to Björn Fratangelo in three sets. In the next few weeks, five defeats followed in the first round, although the Greek celebrated his premiere on the ATP World Tour in Rotterdam and also had to admit defeat to a top 15 player with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . A week later in Marseille he suffered the same fate against Mikhail Juschny , albeit less closely in the 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 defeat. In 2017 it also made its debut at a Grand Slam tournament . At the French Open and Wimbledon he failed in the first round. He won his first Challenger title in Genoa when he defeated Guillermo García López in straight sets with a wildcard in the final . As a result, he jumped to number 120 in the world rankings. In autumn of that year, he competed in five World Tour tournaments in qualification and made it into the main field each time. In Metz , Chengdu and Tokyo he failed at his opening hurdle, in Shanghai he defeated Karen Chatschanow before he failed to John Isner , and at the tournament in Antwerp he defeated three top 60 players including world number tenth David Goffin . In his first ATP semifinals, he lost to Diego Schwartzman . He ended the year with the final at the Challenger in Brest , when the Frenchman Corentin Moutet won. He finished the year in 91st place.

In 2018 , Tsitsipas was able to regularly take part in World Tour events, as his ranking allowed this for the first time. The year began with the quarter-finals in Doha , where he was defeated by Dominic Thiem . At the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Melbourne, he was defeated by next-gen star Denis Shapovalov , who was about the same, in the first round in three sets. After further mixed to good results, the Greek surprised the competition at the clay court tournament in Barcelona . Without losing a set and without having to play a tie-break, he made it to the final and left Dominic Thiem and Pablo Carreño Busta behind, among others . In the final, the clay court king Rafael Nadal was clearly superior with 6: 2, 6: 1. The following week, Tsitsipas reached the semi-finals again in Estoril , where he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner João Sousa . He had previously defeated his third top 10 player, Kevin Anderson . At the Grand Slam in Paris he lost in round 2 against Thiem in four sets, and a little later in Wimbledon he made it to the round of 16 for the first time. Here the American John Isner got the upper hand in three sentences. Tsitsipas started the American hard court season successfully. He made it to the semi-finals in Washington before Alexander Zverev stopped him. His greatest success so far was at the Masters in Toronto . After an opening win against Damir Džumhur , he defeated four players from the top 10, one after the other with Dominic Thiem, Novak Đoković , Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson, in sometimes very close matches . With 15th place he reached his career record after the tournament. At the US Open , Tsitsipas did not get past the second round. Just before the end of the season, he won the Stockholm Open . He was also able to win the final tournament of the best placed under 21-year-old next-gen stars. As the best-noted participant, he won the final against the Australian Alex De Minaur .

At the beginning of 2019, he won the round of 16 against defending champion Roger Federer at the Australian Open . After winning the quarter-finals against the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut , he lost again to Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals. The rest of the season was rather mixed for him until the end of the season, at the French Open he just failed in the last sixteen in five sets against Stan Wawrinka. In Wimbledon and at the US Open, he was eliminated in the first round. In the run-up to the French Open, he reached the final at the Masters tournament in Madrid , where he was defeated by Novak Đoković in two sets. After the Sansplatz season, the successes were initially lacking, only at the end of the season did his form improve again. After a final defeat in Beijing against Dominic Thiem and reaching the semifinals in Shanghai, Tsitsipas won the ATP Finals at the end of the season with a 6: 7, 6: 2, 7: 6 in the final against Thiem. It was his first participation in the season-end tournament. This success enabled him to finish the season in sixth place in the world rankings.
