Matteo Berrettini (born April 12, 1996 in Rome ) is an Italian tennis player .

Career

Matteo Berrettini played mainly on the Future and Challenger Tour. So far, he has won two singles and four doubles on the Future Tour. On the Challenger Tour he had his only success so far in San Benedetto del Tronto in the individual competition. He was able to defeat the fourth-placed Serb Laslo Đere in the final 6: 3, 6: 4.

In 2017 he made his debut on the ATP World Tour . He received a wild card for the Masters tournament in his hometown of Rome . There he met his compatriot Fabio Fognini on the first lap , to whom he clearly had to admit defeat in two sets.

In July 2018 he reached a new career high of 54th place in the world rankings after winning his first World Tour title in Gstaad in both singles and doubles .

In April 2019, Berretini won his second tournament victory on the ATP World Tour in Budapest . Without losing a set, he won the lawn tournament in Stuttgart , where he defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime 6: 4 and 7: 6 in the final. In Halle / Westphalia he failed in the semifinals to David Goffin . At the Grand Slam in Wimbledon , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the eventual finalist Roger Federer . At the US Open , he failed in the semifinals in three sets to Rafael Nadal .
In October, the 23-year-old lost to Alexander Zverev in the semifinals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters . By reaching the semi-finals of the Erste Bank Open in the Wiener Stadthalle , where he lost in three sets to the Austrian Dominic Thiem , he climbed to eighth place in the world rankings and qualified for the first time for the ATP finals in London . In this he did not get beyond the group stage. During the 2019 season he made his debut for the Italian Davis Cup team .
