Fabio Fognini (born May 24, 1987 in Sanremo ) is an Italian tennis player .

Career

On November 19, 2007 Fognini was listed in the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time . His biggest single success to date at a Grand Slam tournament was at the French Open in 2011 , when he reached the quarter-finals there. He had to surrender to Novak Đoković without a fight, however, because he had torn a muscle fiber in his left thigh.

In 2013 he won an ATP tournament for the first time in his third appearance in the finals. He defeated the favorite Philipp Kohlschreiber in three sets in Stuttgart . Just a week later, he was able to celebrate his second title at the tournament of the ATP World Tour 500 series in Hamburg ; in the final he defeated the Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis in three sets. In Umag , Croatia , Fognini reached the third final in a row; however, he was defeated by Tommy Robredo in two sets. Nevertheless, he managed to jump into the top 20 in the world rankings.

In his career, Fognini also won three ATP double titles with his compatriot Simone Bolelli . At the ATP tournament in Umag in 2011 they defeated the pairing Marin Čilić / Lovro Zovko 6: 3, 5: 7 and [10: 7]. In 2013 they defeated Nicholas Monroe and Simon Stadler in the final of the Copa Claro , as well as the Croatian duo Marin Čilić and Ivan Dodig in the Davis Cup eighth final . In 2015 they finally won the doubles competition at the Australian Open , in which they had already reached the semi-finals two years earlier.

On April 21, 2019, he won the first Masters tournament of his career at the Monte-Carlo tournament . In the final he defeated Dušan Lajović 6: 3, 6: 4. Before that, Fognini was able to defeat eleven-time tournament winner Rafael Nadal in two sets in the semifinals .

Behavior and controversy in the field

Fognini is considered unrestrained and eccentric on the pitch. In 2014 in particular, he was noticed at several tournaments for bad behavior and insults. At the ATP tournament in Madrid he threatened the Swedish chair referee and the audience in the match against Oleksandr Dolhopolow . At Wimbledon he was fined £ 27,500 (in the game against Alex Kuznetsov ) for threatening officials; he then accused the organizers of having disadvantaged him in the subsequent fixtures. In July 2014 at the ATP tournament in Hamburg he referred to his Serbian opponent Filip Krajinović as "Zingaro di merda" ("Fucking Gypsies"), for which he later apologized. At the ATP tournament in Shanghai in the same year he refused to shake hands on the net after his defeat by Wang Chuhan ; he shoved him instead and showed the audience the middle finger, for which he was fined ($ 2,000). On September 2, 2017, Fognini was excluded from the tournament management (Grand Slam Board) at the 2017 US Open because he massively sexistically insulted the Swedish chair referee Louise Engzell in his first-round encounter in singles against Stefano Travaglia , whom he lost in five sets would have. According to the video recordings, he is said to have poisoned her with “Una troia sei, pompinara!” , Which translates into German as “You are a bitch, a cunt!” . He is said to have literally topped it up with “bocchinara” , in German “cock sucker” . Therefore, investigations continued against him, which could result in an additional fine of up to 250,000 US dollars. After violating the code of conduct three times in said first-round match, he was fined $ 24,000. Due to the disqualification, Fognini was no longer allowed to compete in his second round match in doubles with his compatriot Simone Bolelli .

At Wimbledon 2019 , Fognini said after his third-round loss to Tennys Sandgren that "a bomb should explode" on the tennis court. He then had to pay a fine of 2700 euros.

Personal

He has been married to Flavia Pennetta since June 11, 2016 . On May 19, 2017, the two parents of a son named Federico.
