Marin Čilić (born September 28, 1988 in Međugorje , SR Bosnia and Herzegovina , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian tennis player .

Career

2004-2007

In 2005 Čilić won the French Open in junior competition and led the junior world rankings. In the same year he turned professional. 2006 Čilić made his debut in the Davis Cup .

In 2007 the Croat was in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open . In the first round he was defeated by the Serb Ilija Bozoljac with 2: 6, 4: 6 and 1: 6. In February he defeated Benjamin Becker in the Davis Cup match against Germany , but could no longer prevent Croatia from being eliminated.

In the first round of the French Open, Čilić was defeated by Thierry Ascione from France 2: 6, 2: 6 and 1: 6. At the lawn tournament at Queen's Club in London , Čilić surprisingly beat Tim Henman 7: 6, 5 , 2: 6 and 6: 4 in the first round . With further victories over Alejandro Falla and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , the Croat reached the quarter-finals. There he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Andy Roddick 4: 6 and 6: 7 5 . At Wimbledon, Čilić lost to Gilles Simon 6: 3, 5: 7, 4: 6, 6: 4 and 3: 6 in the first round .

2008: First victory in an ATP tournament

Čilić reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open , in which he was defeated by James Blake . At the French Open he was eliminated in the second round, but reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon , where he lost to Arnaud Clément . Čilić represented Croatia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , where he was eliminated in the second round against Fernando González . In August 2008 he won his first ATP tournament at the Pilot Pen Tennis in New Haven with a success 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 2 over Mardy Fish . On his debut at the US Open Čilić reached the third round, where he lost to Novak Đoković in four sets.

2009–2012

The Croatian won his second ATP Tour title with a 6: 4, 7: 6 3 win over Indian Somdev Devvarman in Chennai, India at the beginning of the year . At Wimbledon he made it into the third round, where he was defeated by Tommy Haas in five sets. At the US Open in September, he played his most successful Grand Slam tournament to date. He defeated Andy Murray , who was seeded at two, 7: 5, 6: 2, 6: 2 in the round of 16 , but lost in the quarter-finals in four sets against the eventual winner Juan Martín del Potro .

Right at the beginning of the 2010 season he won the tournament in Chennai and thus defended his title. In the final he defeated the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 7: 6 and 7: 6. At the Australian Open Čilić reached the semi-finals, in which he was defeated by Andy Murray in four sets. At the next tournament in Zagreb , where he stood as defending champion, he won the title for the second time against the unset German Michael Berrer in three sets with 6: 4, 6: 7 5 and 6: 3. That was his second title in two months after winning in Chennai in January.

At the Wimbledon Championships 2012 , the Čilić won the fourth longest match in the history of the tournament against the American Sam Querrey after five and a half hours with 7: 6 6 , 6: 4, 6: 7 2 , 6: 7 3 and 17:15. He finally failed in the second round to Andy Murray.

Since 2013: doping ban and first Grand Slam title

As part of the 2013 BMW Open Marin Cilic was at a doping test positive for nikethamide tested. Čilić stated that he unknowingly ingested the drug via a tablet obtained from a pharmacy. As this was not intended to increase performance, he received a reduced suspension of nine months, which was retroactive from May 1, 2013 to January 31, 2014. The International Court of Sports then reduced the suspension to only four months, as it did not consider Čilić's guilt as serious as the ITF arbitration tribunal . With that, Čilić was again eligible to play from the Masters tournament in Paris . In September 2013, he also signed a new coach, Goran Ivanišević .

In February 2014 Marin Čilić played three finals on the World Tour in a row. On February 9, he won the final in Zagreb against Tommy Haas in two sets before he was also defeated by Tomáš Berdych in the Rotterdam final in two sets the following week . On February 23, he defeated Kevin Anderson in three sets at Delray Beach .

In September 2014 Marin Čilić reached the US Open , seeded number 14, for the first time the final of a Grand Slam tournament. In the semifinals he defeated Roger Federer 6: 3, 6: 4 and 6: 4. He won the final against the tenth seeded Kei Nishikori , who had previously beaten world number one Novak Đoković, 6: 3, 6: 3 and 6: 3, making him the first to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals . There he was eliminated early with three defeats in the preliminary round. He was u. a. for his Grand Slam success - the second of a Croat after that of his coach Ivanišević - voted Croatia's Sportsman of the Year 2014 at the US Open.

The year 2015 was not as successful as the previous one. At the US Open , he reached the semi-finals as defending champion. At least he was able to successfully defend his title at the Moscow ATP tournament at the end of the year . It was his only tournament victory in 2015.

In July 2016, Čilić announced that he had ended his collaboration with Goran Ivanišević. The Swede Jonas Björkman became his new coach. Shortly afterwards, he immediately won his first tournament victory in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category , when he defeated Andy Murray in the Cincinnati final. With his victory at the ATP tournament in Basel , he also achieved his first tournament victory on the ATP World Tour 500 level . This made him one of the top ten in the world rankings.

In July 2017, Čilić, seeded in seventh place, reached his second Grand Slam final in individual at Wimbledon . In the final, he clearly had to admit defeat to Roger Federer in three sets 3: 6, 1: 6, 4: 6, who was able to triumph at the grass tournament for the eighth time.

At the beginning of the 2018 season he made it to the final of the Australian Open for the first time , but lost this match against defending champion Roger Federer in five sets with 2: 6, 7: 6, 3: 6, 6: 3, 1: 6. During the lawn season he won his 18th title when he beat Novak Đoković in three sets in the final at the Queen's Club . At the end of the season he won the Davis Cup with Croatia .
