Defending champion in the singles was Novak Đoković , who reached the final again this year. With Rafael Nadal he faced an opponent in the final who had already won the Rome Masters three times. Also this year the Spaniard was able to win the tournament with 7: 6 2 , 6: 2 and made himself the only record holder of the tournament to date. In the current year, this was his fifth title on the ATP Tour and his 36th title in his career. The American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan won the doubles title last year. This year they reached the final again, but lost it against last year's finalists Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić in two sets with 7: 6 5 , 6: 3.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 2,227,500 euros; the total financial liabilities were 2,750,000 euros.
The qualification took place from April 23 to 24, 2009. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
The following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who moved into the main draw via qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round. Otherwise the amounts are not cumulative (prize money for the double competition per team).
