The Heineken Open 2009 was a tennis tournament that took place from January 11th to 18th, 2009 in Auckland . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played outdoors on hard courts. In the same week, the Medibank International Sydney was played in Sydney , which, like the Heineken Open, was part of the ATP World Tour 250 category .

Defending champion in the individual was Philipp Kohlschreiber , who was eliminated in the quarterfinals. The winner was the top seed Juan Martín del Potro , who prevailed against Sam Querrey in the final and was able to celebrate his fifth ATP title. In doubles, Luis Horna and Juan Mónaco were the defending champions. The winners were Martin Damm and Robert Lindstedt , ATP title could celebrate what their first together.

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 28 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The four top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round.

The qualification took place from January 8th to 10th, 2009. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
