The SAP Open 2009 was a tennis tournament that took place in San José from February 9th to 15th . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2009 and was played indoors on a hard court. In the same week, the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament was played in Rotterdam and the Brasil Open in Costa do Sauípe . The latter, like the SAP Open, belonged to the ATP World Tour 250 category , while the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament belonged to the ATP World Tour 500 category .

Defending champion in the singles was Andy Roddick , who was eliminated in the semifinals. The single winner was Radek Štěpánek , who was also able to triumph in doubles with his partner Tommy Haas and thus won a total of 109,265 US dollars in prize money. He won his fourth individual title. In the singles he won against Mardy Fish 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 2; in doubles against Rohan Bopanna and Jarkko Nieminen 6: 2, 6: 3.

The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The total prize pool was $ 531,000 and the total financial debt was $ 600,000.

The qualification took place from February 7th to 9th, 2009. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There were also two lucky losers.
