Last year's winner in the individual was Juan Martín del Potro , who made it into the final again this year and defeated the top seeded American Andy Roddick in three sets with 3: 6, 7: 5, 7: 6 6 . In the current year it was the second tournament victory for del Potro, who has already won the tournament in Auckland . Overall, this was the sixth tournament victory on the ATP Tour for the Argentine. In doubles, Marc Gicquel and Robert Lindstedt were the defending champions. While Gicquel no longer took part in doubles, Lindstedt and his new partner Martin Damm won the tournament for the second time in a row. In the final they won against the Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in straight sets 7: 5, 7: 6 3 .
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 48 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The 16 top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize pool was $ 1,165,500; total financial liabilities were $ 1,402,000.
The qualification took place from July 30th to August 1st, 2009. Six qualifying places that entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament were played out. There was also a lucky loser.
