Frank Russell Dancevic (born September 26, 1984 in Niagara Falls , Ontario ) is a Canadian tennis player and coach.

Career

Frank Dancevic surprisingly defeated Nikolai Dawydenko on his ATP debut in Washington in 2002 . A year later he received a wildcard for the Canada Masters and this time defeated Dawydenko 6: 7, 6: 4, 3: 6. In 2004 Dancevic was in the second round at the lawn tournament in Queens and in 2005 came into the second round in Memphis and San José . In early 2006, he won a Challenger tournament in Hawaii and shortly thereafter was in the final of another Challenger. He showed his best performances in summer on grass. At the tournament in the Queen's Club in London he was defeated by Andy Roddick, fifth in the world rankings, in round two with 6: 2, 4: 6, 3: 6. In Newport he lost to Jürgen Melzer 4: 6, 6: 3, 4: 6 in round two . He won the Challenger tournament in Granby in late summer, making it into the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time . He then came to the second round of four consecutive ATP tournaments. In Bangkok he lost 6: 2, 6: 7, 4: 6 after a hard fight against the world number 17. Jarkko Nieminen , against whom he was eliminated in Toronto. In Tokyo he had no chance against Tim Henman and in Stockholm Kristof Viegen was the final destination after three sets in round two . He ended the year as number 87 in the world rankings. In early 2007 he was in the second round of the Australian Open , where he was defeated by local hero Lleyton Hewitt 4: 6, 4: 6, 6: 3, 4: 6. In Indian Wells he lost in round two against the world number five Fernando González 6: 7, 6: 1, 5: 7. As number 109 in the world rankings, he moved into the final in Indianapolis at the end of July. After victories over seeded Benjamin Becker and Juan Martín del Potro , he met top seeded Andy Roddick in the first semi-final of his career. At 43 degrees Celsius, he defeated the world number four and hit 15 aces. In the final he was defeated by Dmitri Tursunow , but made it into the top 100 again.

At the Canadian Open in Montreal he was in the last eight in front of a home crowd and gave world number second Rafael Nadal a tough fight. He lost to the Spaniard 6: 4, 2: 6, 3: 6 and climbed to 65th place. At the US Open , Dancevic lost to Marat Safin 5: 7, 6: 7 and 6: 7, in doubles he was able to do that in Tokyo Reach the endgame.

In 2008 he lost to the seeded Jarkko Nieminen in five sets at the Australian Open . After a disappointing season up to then, the Canadian caused a surprise at Wimbledon . Starting with a wildcard, he defeated the seven-seeded former finalist David Nalbandian in three sets in the first round . A lap later, his soaring was stopped when he lost to Bobby Reynolds . Shortly thereafter, Dancevic reached the semi-finals at the lawn tournament in Newport after beating the fourth seeded Igor Kunizyn , where he lost 6: 7, 6: 4, 3: 6 to Prakash Amritraj . In Indianapolis , last year's finalist failed in round one against Bobby Reynolds in three sets and fell far behind in the ranking. In Toronto Dancevic received a wildcard and surprised in the opening round with a win over Mario Ančić . He then retired against defending champion Novak Đoković 4: 6, 4: 6. In early 2009 , Dancevic qualified both in Sydney and at the Australian Open for the main round, where he lost to James Blake in the main draw after defeating Xavier Malisse in qualifying round three . In Miami he surprisingly won against Philipp Kohlschreiber before he had to admit defeat to world number three Novak Đoković. In June he reached his second ATP final in Eastbourne , but, like in Indianapolis in 2007, lost out to Dmitri Tursunow, who won the game in straight sets. From 2010 onwards he did not achieve any major successes on the World Tour. On the Challenger Tour, on the other hand, he secured three individual titles: in 2012 he defeated Igor Andrejew in the final in Dallas in two sets, a year later he prevailed for the third time in Granby when he defeated Lukáš Lacko in three sets. In 2014 he defeated Norbert Gombos at the tournament in Košice in the final in three sets. Dancevic also won a title in doubles in Lexington in 2013 . At the side of Peter Polansky , he prevailed in the final 7: 5 and 6: 3 against Bradley Klahn and Michael Venus .

In 2017, Dancevic followed Martin Laurendeau, the long-time captain of the Canadian Davis Cup team . In 2019 , the team under Dancevic, as captain, made it to the final in the Davis Cup for the first time in history . Against Spain Canada was defeated with 0: 2nd In August 2019, Dancevic was hired as a coach by Vasek Pospisil in addition to his captaincy . While Dancevic regularly competed in individual tournaments on the Challenger and the World Tour until August 2018, since then he has only participated in the qualifying rounds of the ATP tournaments in Beijing in the 2019 season and in Auckland in the 2020 season. Both times he didn't get past the first round.
