Dmitri Igorewitsch Tursunow ( Russian Дмитрий Игоревич Турсунов ; born December 12, 1982 in Moscow ) is a former Russian tennis player .
Career
Tursunov left his hometown Moscow at the age of 12 to train at the Gorin Tennis Academy in Sacramento , California . His father Igor, a former engineer, pushed his son to become a tennis player. This led to conflict and several attempts by Dmitri to run away from home. His first time in the United States was difficult. Tursunow did not enjoy tennis because he trained it for his father and not for himself. Tursunov's father died of pancreatic cancer three days after his victory at the 2011 ATP tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch . In an interview from August 2011, Tursunow said that he now understands his father's motives and is grateful that he wanted to use his means to achieve the best for his son.
Tursunow plays the forehand right-handed, the backhand with both hands. He reached his highest world ranking position in singles on October 2, 2006 with position 20 and in doubles with position 36 on June 16, 2008.
From December 1 to 3, 2006, he played for the first time for the Russian Davis Cup team in Moscow and, with a win against Andy Roddick, helped the Russian team reach the final and ultimately win the Davis Cup in 2006 . The game against Roddick lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes and went to Tursunow 6: 3, 6: 4, 5: 7, 3: 6, 17:15. In 2007 he won the Hopman Cup together with Nadja Petrowa against Spain.
He played his last professional tournament in October 2017. He has been Aryna Sabalenka's coach since the 2018 season .
