Koenig grew up in a tennis-loving family and began playing tennis at the age of five. His uncle Gaetan Koenig had played for the South African Davis Cup team in 1960 and had moved into the second round of the French Open in 1957 . From 1991 he first played in satellite tournaments and was able to win his first match at the Challenger tournament in Johannesburg . The following year he became a professional tennis player and reached the third round of the ATP tournament in Washington . Due to this success he reached his highest single listing in the tennis world rankings with position 262 . In addition, he stood with the Swede Douglas Geiwald the double finals of the Challenger tournament in Dublin . He won his first double title on the Challenger Tour in 1996 in Aachen . In 1999 he was in the final of an ATP tournament in St. Pölten for the first time. It was not until 2002 that he celebrated his first title win in Tashkent , followed by another tournament victory in Kitzbühel . In total, he was able to win five ATP double titles in the course of his career, and another six times he was in a final. His highest ranking on the double world rankings was position 28 in 2003.
Koenig played three doubles games for the South African Davis Cup team between 2002 and 2003 . He was able to win all three games at the side of changing partners. For the 2004 Summer Olympics , the National Olympic Committee of South Africa decided not to report a double, although Koenig and Chris Haggard's joint world rankings could have enabled participation.
